The men’s 100m backstroke in Budapest is one that very well may come down to the touch, with the top 8 men all separated by just .72 after semi-finals at these World Junior Championships. Sitting as the 2nd seeded swimmer behind leader Nikolay Zuev of Russia (54.08) is Frenchman Mewen Tomac, the teen who just hit a new lifetime best of 54.42.
Entering these Championships, the 17-year-old’s personal best rested at the 54.57 he threw down for 4th place in the 100m back at this year’s European Junior Championships in Kazan. That rendered the Frenchman just .10 out of 4th place and hungry to improve at these Championships in the sprint event, although he did earn silver in Kazan in the 200m back (1:58.31).
Splits for his previous best were 26.34/28.23, while tonight’s semi-final effort saw Tomac save a little for the back half, splitting 26.46/27.96. His time tonight checks-in as a new French Age Record for 17-year-olds and marks Tomac as a contender for gold tomorrow night if he can continue to be at his best.
