The medals which will be given out this summer at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto were unveiled today at the Royal Ontario Museum. The games will be held July 10-26 with events taking place across southern Ontario.
Canadian Olympic gold medallist Mark Tewksbury told the CBC, “These Toronto 2015 medals are pieces of art in their own right, and reflect all the hard work, dedication and the difficult journey athletes will take to wear one around their neck and cherish for life.” Tewksbury won the 100m backstroke at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.
The unveiling of the medals also marked a first for the Pan Am Games, as the organizing committee included Braille on the design for both the Pan Am medals and the Parapan Am medals.
Previously, Canada has used Braille on their medals. At the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Games, medals were engraved with Braille writing.
The Royal Canadian Mint will in charge of producing these medals.
