Torri Huske Swims 9:51 1000 Freestyle in Stanford Victory Over ASU

Stanford hosted Arizona State on Friday afternoon for a dual meet. This was the first meet of the year and first since midseason for ASU as COVID-19 protocols have canceled their previously scheduled meets. This also was the first meet for the Stanford women since midseason.

The Stanford women won the meet with a score of 160-90. They won 13 out of 14 events (not including diving). Stanford exhibitioned all non-first place finishes after the 50 freestyle.

The Stanford women began the meet going 1-2 in the 200 medley relay. The ‘A’ relay of Regan Smith (24.30), Allie Raab (28.12), Emma Wheal (23.79), and Taylor Ruck (22.62) won in a time of 1:38.83. The ‘B’ relay swam a time of 1:40.29. Freshman Janelle Rudolph anchored swimming freestyle in a time of 22.56. She was the only split on the ‘B’ relay faster than the ‘A’ relay.

Stanford kept their momentum going as freshman Torri Huske swam a time of 9:51.06 in the 1000 freestyle to earn the victory. This was her first time swimming the event for Stanford and it places her 22nd in the NCAA this season. Senior Morgan Tankersley swam to second in a season best time of 9:54.26. Freshman Aurora Roghair touched in third in a time of 10:04.16. ASU’s Emma Nordin, who holds the top time in the NCAA this season in the event, took fourth in a time of 10:12.77.

The Cardinal’s swept the 100 backstroke. Junior Taylor Ruck led the way swimming to a time of 52.97. Her time was just off of her time of 52.74 from midseason. She was followed by senior Lucie Nordmann (54.04, dual-meet best) and junior Alexandra Crisera (54.10, dual-meet best).

Raab won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:02.17. This was her second collegiate meet of the 2021-2022 season She has not competed since the team’s first meet against SJSU all the way back at the beginning of October. At the 2021 NCAA Championships, she finished 12th in the 200 breaststroke (2:07.70) and 13th in the 100 breaststroke (58.97). 

Raab leads a small breaststroke group at Stanford after Zoe Bartel announced her retirement earlier in the season. Without Bartel, the pressure ramps on Raab heading toward the NCAA Championships, as the breaststroke races are currently the team’s biggest weakness.

Freshman Regan Smith won the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:55.85. This was about three seconds off her time of 1:52.48 from midseason which ranks her fourth in the NCAA this season. 

Stanford freshmen Huske and Wheal went 1-2 in the 50 freestyle. Huske went a time of 22.79, and Wheal went a time of 22.97. Huske holds the third best time in the NCAA this season as she went a 21.70 at midseason. 

Rudolph won the 100 freestyle for Stanford by over 1.5 seconds as she went a time of 49.99. This was just off her time of 49.37 from midseason. Last year at the NCAA Championships, she swam a 49.37 in prelims in the event. 

Arizona State was led by senior Erica Laning. Laning won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:47.58. This was her best dual-meet time this season and not far off of her season best of 1:45.57 which she swam at midseason. Laning also finished second in the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:53.13. That swim was a dual-meet season best for her. 

Sophomore Jade Foelske swam to a second place finish in the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:58.71. This was off of her season best of 1:56.56 that she swam at the ASU Intrasquad a week ago. Foelske also finished second in the 100 butterfly in a time of 54.66. That time would have earned her second place even if Stanford had not exhibitioned some of their swimmers.

The Stanford women have their next meet scheduled for January 22nd at home against Arizona. ASU’s next meet is scheduled for Saturday, January 22nd at Cal.
