Tough Texas men’s schedule includes big October quad plus mid-season split

The Texas Longhorn men have officialized their 2014-2015 schedule, which includes battles with 5 of the top 10 teams at last year’s NCAA Championships.

Texas, which finished #2 in 2014, will head to Michigan in October for one of the highest-profile mid-season meets in the country, taking on #4 Michigan and #10 Indiana plus #11 Louisville. That quad meet happens on October 24-25, and should give star freshman Joseph Schooling a chance to take on defending NCAA 200 fly champ Dylan Bosch of Michigan.

The ‘Horns will also dual #6 Auburn and #5 Georgia within the same week. They’ll travel to Auburn on Thursday, January 8th, then head straight to Athens for a Saturday, January 10th battle with Georgia. A couple weeks later, they round out their top-10 opponents with #7 Arizona, who come to Austin for a triangular along with SMU.

The Georgia dual should set up a couple more exciting showdowns. Perhaps we’ll see Schooling vs. Chase Kalisz in the 200 fly, and we should get a rematch between Jack Conger and Georgia’s Matias Koski in the 500 free after the two finished 4th (Koski) and 5th (Conger) at NCAAs last spring. The Auburn dual should give Texas freshman Brett Ringgold a chance to take on last year’s NCAA freshman sprint sensation Kyle Darmody of Auburn.

The other big note is that Texas appears to have two mid-season rest meets listed on the schedule. The Longhorns usually host their own Texas Invite, which this year runs from December 4th to the 6th. But the team also has the Hawkeye Invitational listed on the schedule, which is December 5th to the 7th.

The draw to Iowa would be a chance to see the Hawkeyes’ pool, which will host both men’s NCAAs and the Zone Diving championships. But the allure of a home invite is a big pull, too, and last year the Texas Invite was one of the faster meets in the country. For now, Texas says decisions on who to send where likely won’t happen for awhile.

The men line up their own tough schedule, keeping pace with the women, who will face the top 4 returning teams from NCAAs last year.

You can view the men’s schedule below, or on the Texas website here.

I wonder if HarryP is Harrison Pierce, Austin Temples HS teammate. He is another ‘diamond’ in the class. 21.3 flat start 50 fly, 20.06 50 free and 47.5 in the 100 bk/100 fly. And he is such a relay beast he went out of his range in the 200 1:36 split unshaved. Tide always develops talent. These kids are ready to continue to excel at the next level!

I cannot write funny stuff like the poster above, but instead, here are 10 things I will be following in the upcoming season, that I tweeted last 2 weeks. Cannot wait for new season ti begin and the first White-Orange meet on 26th. Hook’em!

1: Will Jack Conger focus on 100/200/500 free and 100 fly primarily and not on 200 back this season?
2: Will Austin Temple provide much needed breaststroke speed? His best 52.87. 52.44 was enough for 100 Breast 2014 A Final.
3: Just making B qualifying time will not be enough to make NCAA team this year. I expect 4 freshmen to qualify too
4: Is it possible 10 Horns will score at NCAA… Read more »

1&4. The depth of the fly group here is one reason why I’d like to see Conger go after the 200 free.

2. Almost definitely on the 100 breast. Murray threw down a pretty impressive breast split on the 200 medley relay last year, though, so it’ll be interesting to see if Temple gets there or not. Murray on breast and Ellis on free might be the better combination, for now.

5,6,9. I think Schooling is pretty much a lock for the 200 IM. His current SCY time is only like a 1:45, but he goes sub-2:00 in LCM, which should put him closer to 1:43 and the B-final, at least. I think you got to keep Murray in… Read more »

Jared Anderson

Jared Anderson swam for nearly twenty years. Then, Jared Anderson stopped swimming and started writing about swimming. He's not sick of swimming yet. Swimming might be sick of him, though.
