Backstroker Kira Toussaint hit the FINA “A” cut right down to the hundredth of a second, earning an Olympic berth by the narrowest of margins on day 2 of the Dutch Olympic qualifier.

A 1:00.25 in the 100 back earned Toussaint the Olympic roster spot and also re-broke the Dutch National Championships record she set in both prelims and semifinals. Toussaint was 1:00.51 in heats and 1:00.50 in semis before sneaking down to the A cut in the final.

She’s now just about two tenths off the Dutch national record of 1:00.03 set by Femke Heemskerk in 2011.

Toussaint was the only swimmer to hit an “A” cut in a final, though four others made the A standard in semifinal events on the night.

Heemskerk hit one in the 200 free, though that wasn’t a new cut. Heemskerk had already been 1:57 this year and even 1:56.1 last December, but went 1:56.61 to take the top spot out of semis. That swim was notable because Heemskerk was allowed to skip the heats entirely, taking a guaranteed semifinal spot in exchange for swimming the 4×200 free relay last night, per meet officials.

Two more “A” cuts went down in that same race. Esmee Vermeulen was 1:58.43 and Robin Neumann 1:58.63. Both are teammates with the NTC Dolphin club. Rising star Marrit Steenbergen was off the cut in 1:59.01, but already made the “A” standard while leading off the relay last night.

The only “A” cut on the men’s side was Sebastiaan Verschuren‘s 100 free. He went 48.77 to rattle his season-best 48.6 from last December.
