Townley Haas Again Splits Fastest 200 Free Ever

2017 MEN’S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

In a night full of incredible splits that continued the season-long trend of redefining the meaning of “fast” in the 200 yard freestyle, Townley Haas anchored the Longhorns to a 2nd place finish in a 1:30.42 split that now stands as the fastest of all time.

That time is exactly a tenth of a second than Haas’s split in this relay last year that propelled Texas to the fastest time ever in this race.

Haas 2016: 20.41/43.36/1:06.89/1:30.52
Haas 2017: 20.20/43.01/1:06.68/1:30.42

Last year Haas’s split on this relay was an indication of what was in store for Haas the next two days: a win in the 500 free and the fastest time ever in the individual 200 free.  From there, the Virginia native won the 200 free at Olympic Trials, made the finals in the individual event in Rio, and threw down a blazing split on the USA’s gold medal winning 4×200 free relay.

Haas was 2nd on last year’s relay, forming a devastating 1-2 tandem with leadoff Jack Conger as Texas set the US Open and NCAA records in the event.  Tonight, Haas anchored the Texas relay, trying to run down NC State’s Soeren Dahl, who was able to hold off Haas with a 1:30.67 split en route to the Wolfpack smashing Texas’s mark from last year.  Dahl’s time tonight appears to be only behind Haas and Michael Wynalda in terms of fastest splits ever.

So now two more people have broken 1:31 from a flat start (Pieroni, Carter) and Dahl went 1:30.6 anchoring. This 200 free final looks like it’s going to be a very interesting one. Haas 1:30.36 individual? No idea

1:30.87 LEAD-OFF by Indina’s Blake Pieroni may
intrinsically best of all tonight. Seems his time is underrated

I always feel like lead offs don’t get as much attention as they should considering.

Yeah!!! Considering not having a rolling start and subtracting rxn time Pieroni split 1:30.2low compared to Haas 1:30.2high and Dahl 1:30.3. We are in for an intense 200free final. May not exactly be as fast with everyone bunched up or could be a huge swim if someone can ride a wave and blast past everyone the last 50.

Carter didn’t split the fastest 200 Free of all time. Is that what you’re asking?
