UMBC men
Towson, Md. – Senior Ilia Rattsev (Moscow, Russia) and junior Natalija Marin (Belgrade, Serbia) each won three events, but host Towson edged UMBC swimming and diving in a spirited dual meet held at Burdick Hall.
Marin triumphed in three individual events for the first time in her career. She touched first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.26), and the 100 (56.56) and 200-yard (2:04.05) butterfly events.
In addition, Marin swam the second leg as the Retrievers captured the concluding 400-yard freestyle relay.
Rattsev captured the 100 (45.87) and 200-yard freestyle (1:40.85) events and the dramatic penultimate event, the 200-yard individual medley (1:53.15).
“Although we lost to an excellent Towson program, I am so proud of our men and women,” said head coach Chad Cradock. “Our goal is to continue to get better meet to meet. Today we were faster and stronger than in earlier meets and we won most of the close ones. We will remain focused on our theme to ‘be the change.’ It is up to each of us to make the change to be the best we can be.”
After 17 events, the men’s meet was knotted at 141.5 apiece after Cradock inserted Rattsev into the 200 individual medley and the senior responded with a victory. The Retrievers held a slim lead after the first 100 yards of the concluding 400-yard freestyle relay, but the host Tigers managed to prevail.
Kai Wisner (Syracuse, N.Y.) also earned a pair of golds, as the junior won both the 1000 (9:33.04) and 500-yard freestyle events (4:34.81).
Senior Garrett Wlochowski (Manchester, Conn.) and sophomore Luka Zuric (Setauket, N.Y.) won both backstroke events for the visitors. Wlochowski triumphed in the 100-yard event in a time of 51.09, just four-hundreths of a second ahead of Towson’s Owen Robinson. Zuric triumphed in the 200-yard backstroke, just ahead of Wlochowski.
On the women’s side, senior Hayley Committe (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) outswam the Tigers in the 100–yard freestyle in a time of 52.40. Committe also led off UMBC’s 400-yard freestyle relay winning squad and earned a silver in the 50 freestyle.
