Towson’s Brian Benzing Books Three Wins At Tiger Winter Open

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams competed against swimmers from George Mason and UMBC in the Tiger Winter Open over three sessions on Friday and Saturday. No team scores were recorded for the meet. Participants competed individually ahead of each team’s conference championship meet.

For the Women

  • Bridget Thomas took the top spot in the 500 free with a season-best 4:57.11. Lizzy Jones also clocked a sub five-minute time at 4:59.28. Ally Frame took third place at 5:02.52.
  • Katie Nunez placed first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:06.32. Laura Gaffney (2:07.37) and Maddie Mince (2:07.99) placed second and third respectively.
  • Tiffany Matulis took first in the first heat of the 50 free with a time of 24.11. Tink Tompkins (24.25) and Victoria Dichak (24.45) rounded out the top three. Claire Ryland placed first in the second heat with a time of 23.92. Hailey Ritter (23.99) and Ava Enriquez (24.08) took second and third respectively.
  • The 400 free relay team of Parker Schulz, Dichak, Janine Murphy and Enriquez placed first at 3:28.49. Julianna Wahl, Mince, Ally Frame and Bridget Thomas took second at 3:29.66.
  • Enriquez (56.28), Gaffney (56.80) and Wahl (56.95) each went under 57 second in the 100 fly.
  • Britney Denny’s 4:31.91 was good for first place in the 400 IM. Holly Greenleaf (4:35.40) and Samantha Casolo (4:37.47) rounded out the top three.
  • Tompkins won the 100 breast with a 1:04.34 while Shay Walker finished second (1:05.47).
  • Schulz took first place in the 100 back, clocking in at 57.02. Ritter finished second at 57.64.
  • Maddie Frick, Tompkins, Mince and Ritter took the top spot in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:45.06.
  • Lizzy Jones won the 1650 with a time of 17:23.40. Dichak followed right behind at 17:27.88.
  • Shannon Parrau won the 1-meter dive with a final score of 251.85. Ashley Sinicropi (234.30) and Abby O’Leary (221.30) finished second and third respectively.
  • Parrau also won the 3-meter dive, scoring 271.13 points. Abby O’Leary finished second with 221.33 points.
  • Jones, Matulis, Walker and Brooke Haag placed first in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:36.90.
  • In the first heat of the 100 free, Matulis took first place with a time of 53.21. Mince took the top spot in the second heat, clocking in at 51.37.
  • Nunez’s 2:21.74 was good for first place in the 100 breast. Tompkins finished second (2:26.27).
  • Gaffney placed first in the 200 fly with a time of 2:04.90.
  • Dichak, Tompkins, Ritter and Thomas took first place in the 400-medley relay with a time of 3:51.70.

For the Men

  • Blakely Dean took the top spot in the 500 free, improving on his season-best with a time of 4:37.43. Drew Munson (4:40.38) and Aiden Rooney (4:40.64) rounded out the top three.
  • Brian Benzing took first place in the second heat of the 200 IM at 1:46.85, narrowly missing the NCAA B cut by 32 one-hundredths of a second. Kirill Pankov finished second overall in the event at 1:50.99.
  • Noah Diacumakos, swimming the 50 free for the first time this season, took the top spot in the first heat with a time of 20.86. Patrick Flint finished second in the heat at 21.53. In the second heat, Michael Fazio took the top spot at 20.44. Luke Schwar (21.05) and Trey Adkins (21.25) finished 2-4 in the heat.
  • Diacumakos, David WaltonEvan Bota and Trey Adkins took the top spot in the 400 free relay at 3:04.23.
  • Diacumakos won the 100 fly with a time of 49.65. Pankov placed second (50.01) and Evan Bota finished fourth (50.34).
  • Ian Hewett swam a 4:09.56 in the 400 IM for the top spot.
  • Fazio’s 1:39.65 in 200 free was good for the top spot. TJ Bearor (1:41.00) and Daniel McLaughlin (1:41.77) finished second and third respectively.
  • Benzing’s 53.02 in the 100 breast was more than four seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
  • Adkins (52.90) and Andrew Lapin (53.18) placed second and third respectively in the 100 back.
  • Reed Sells, Walton, Benzing and McLaughlin finished the 200-medley with a time of 1:31.80.
  • Brendan Farrar took third place in the 1650 with a time of 16:50.77.
  • Ajani Dorner placed third in the 3-meter dive with a score of 224.78.
  • Aidan Clark won the 1-meter dive with a score of 295.80, less than five points from qualifying for NCAA Zones.
  • The 200 free relay team of Walton, Schwar, Carson Bauer and Bookstein (1:24.62) edged out Sells, Adkins, Hewett and Diacumakos (1:24.64) for first place.
  • Flint took the top spot in the 200 back with a time of 1:51.07.
  • Schwar (45.55) and Bearor (45.95) went 1-2 in the second heat of the 100 free.
  • Benzing took first place in the 200 breast with a time of 1:59.01. Diacumakos came in second at 2:00.70.
  • Sells went 1:52.66 in the 200 fly placing first.
  • Benzing, Schwar, Bota and Bearor took first in the 400-medley relay with a time of 3:25.92.

On Deck for Towson
The Tigers’ next stop is Hampton, Virginia for the Colonial Athletic Association Championships Feb. 22-25. Towson will face off with CAA opponents Delaware, Drexel, Monmouth, Northeastern, Stony Brook, UNCW and William & Mary for the conference championships.
