Training at Home: Chlorine Jugs Make for Versatile Exercise Equipment

Many people have found that their local sporting goods stores have run out of dumbbells to use in their at-home workouts.

Here’s a secret improvisational tip for swimmers from a pair of Australia’s best: chlorine jugs.

For safety’s sake, you shouldn’t be using chlorine drums with actual chlorine in them. These drums are usually sold empty – you can fill them with water or sand to add a little weight if desired, but don’t fill them with chlorine for these exercises.

Brianna Throssell and Grant Irvine, both members of the 2016 Australian Olympic Team, demonstrated a series of exercises done with their coach Leighton Cook at home in the video. Given that the drums can be purchased for about $8 each (and are available online as well), along with the shortage of exercise equipment and the ability to adjust weight easily, these jugs make for a quality addition to your at home workout routine.

The swimmers are based at the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) in Perth.
