2021 SPEEDO SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIPS — GREENSBORO

THURSDAY FINALS HEAT SHEET

MEN’S 100 BUTTERFLY — FINALS

Top 3:

  1. Tim Connery (SwimMAC), 53.07
  2. Mitchell Ledford (Treasure Coast), 53.08
  3. Aaron Sequeira (Cincinnati Marlins), 53.56

In the A final of the men’s 100 fly, Treasure Coast Swim Club’s Mitchell Ledford, a 16-year-old, finished 2nd, establishing a new lifetime best of 53.08. He was just 0.01 seconds behind the winner, SwimMAC Carolina’s Tim Connery.

Ledford swam a new lifetime best by exactly half a second. His previous best of 53.58 was swum at the U.S. Olympic Trials Wave I meet in early June. Here is a split comparison between Ledford’s previous best from Wave I Trials, his 54.00 from prelims today, and the 53.08 he swam for 2nd in finals tonight:

Splits 2021 Speedo Summer Champs – East PRELIMS U.S. Olympic Trials Wave I 2021 Speedo Summer Champs – East FINALS
50m 25.64 25.38 25.33
100m 28.36 28.20 27.75
Final Time 54.00 53.58 53.08

As the splits show, Ledford made the vast majority of his improvement over his previous best on the back half of the race. At Wave I, he came home in 28.20 on the 2nd 50, while tonight, he roared home in a blistering 27.75. He was also out just a bit faster than he was at Wave I. Even compared to his prelims swim from today, the biggest difference in the race came from the 2nd 50. The 2.42-seconds difference between Ledford’s 1st and 2nd 50 splits tonight was by far the closest margin between 50s of anyone in the field.

In addition to the big new personal best, Ledford has now risen to #6 all-time for 15-16 boys in the LCM 100 fly. He now sits directly behind none other than Michael Phelps, who had a 15-16 personal best of 52.98 in 2001. Here is the current all-time top 10 for 15-16 boys:

Rank Time Swimmer Date
1 51.84 Andrei Minakov 8/25/2017
2 52.40 Luca Urlando 8/25/2018
3 52.57 Michael Andrew 8/1/2015
4 52.75 Justin Lynch 6/25/2013

9 53.44 Jack Lennertz 8/10/2009
10 53.45 Landon Gentry 11/13/2020

The winner of the men’s 100 fly in Greensboro tonight, Tim Connery, also swam a lifetime best. Connery’s time makes him the #27 performer all-time for 17-18 boys.
