Trip Hedrick Breaks Master’s WR in 65-69 50m Butterfly

Trip Hedrick set a world record in the 65-69 age group for the 50 meter butterfly at the Minnesota Masters LCM Championship.

Hedrick, 67, swam a time of 28.38 to break the former record of 28.54 that was set by Joseph Claret of Spain back in 2009. With his performance, he also took down his own national record of 28.66 in the event.

Hedrick’s swim came after years of heart issues according to the Mayo Clinic. At the age of 46, Hedrick suffered his first heart attack, which included a 99% blockage of his left anterior descending artery. In the resulting surgery, Hedrick had multiple stents placed in his heart to alleviate the blockage. Although that initially worked, he also had to undergo coronary bypass surgery, which helped his condition.

The former coach of the Iowa State University collegiate swim program, Hedrick has had a successful master’s career, setting 18 national records. He is also has 166 individual and 31 relay All-American honors. A butterfly specialist, he still holds the 50-54 world record in the 50 yard butterfly at 23.17 that he set in 2004. Hedrick is also the former world record holder in the event for the 60-64 age group, which was taken down by Hugo Bergman in 2018.

Congratulations, Trip! No one is more deserving. I say this as one who has competed against you for decades.

A “successful master’s career.” I’ll say. Youngsters getting little ablations and acting like it’s a huge deal. Try having a heart attack and a CABG and then go break a world record from the super-suit era mid-way through your age group. Unreal.
