SALT LAKE CITY – Norah Hay bested the field in the 200 backstroke, but that proved to be the only victory of the day for the University of Utah women’s swimming and diving team, as they fell to the No. 8 USC Trojans, 145-111, on Saturday afternoon at the Ute Natatorium.

“I think we did well under the circumstances,” said coach Jonas Persson. “We were really fired up yesterday and I think we were a little bit drained today. Some girls did a lot better than yesterday, some girls did not do as well as yesterday, but that’s expected and we have to learn from it and move forward. We’re competing and getting better, so I’m looking forward to next Friday because I think we can really put it together and have a great meet.”

Hay’s performance in the 200 back was the highlight of the day for Utah, as she collected her first victory of the year. Hay reached the finish in 1.59.93 to take the top spot and right behind her was teammate Katelyn Buono, recording a time of 2:02.50. Hay also took home a third-place finish in the 100 back, clocking in at 56.85.

The Utes picked up a slew of second place finishes, starting in the 200 medley relay, where Harper LehmanHilja SchimmelKatie Hale and Reagan Cathcart posted a time of 1:42.17. Marlene Sandberg swam into second in the 1000 freestyle, finishing in 10:31.49 and Schimmel earned the second spot in 100 breaststroke with a mark of 1:04.21.

Utah’s best time in the 200 breaststroke came courtesy of Charity Pittard, who touched in 2:18.12 and Taylor Kabacy locked up another second-place finish for the Utes in the 500 free with a time of 5:08.07. The final individual second place finisher for the Utes on Saturday was Pittard in the 200 individual medley, thanks to a mark of 2:07.52.

The day’s final event was the 200 freestyle relay and the Utes only barely missed out on posting the event’s best time, as Hale, Palmer, Cathcart and Woznick combined to complete the race in 1:33.64.

Norah Hay really stood out today with her win in the 200 back,” said Persson, “and Katelyn Buono finished second with one of her best times ever, which was outstanding. Hilja put it together in the 100 breaststroke and Katie Hale stepped up in the 50 free and the relay. Summer Stanfield was out today, which was tough for us, but the girls that stepped in in her place really stepped up.”

Next Up
Another home meet awaits for the Utes on Friday, when they’re schedule to host UNLV in a dual meet that will begin at 4 p.m.
