The Trojan Swim Outreach program has applied for a $100,000 grant in the LA2050 grant challenge. We have a unique program, since our athletes at the Trojan Swim Club volunteer to coach underprivileged middle school students in South LA. The swimmers are eager to learn, and strive with the current 4-lane 20-meter facility that they train in at Bethune middle school. We are looking to expand to a 50-m pool at the Miguel Contreras Learning Complex in downtown LA to improve the facilities for our swimmers to excel.

More information about Trojan Swim Outreach

The Trojan Outreach swim program is a partnership with Trojan Swim Club in Southern California that teaches the basics of swimming to children in Los Angeles. The nonprofit outreach program is responsible for coaching, teaching and mentoring children from ages 7 and up. The unique combination of elite athletes coaching the outreach team provides a comprehensive learning experience, and eventually embeds larger goals and aspirations for beginner swimmers.

The program provides water safety for those who have little-to-no experience in the water. This includes floating, treading and the swimming basics. There is a beginner group, and intermediate level swim group, where the children learn freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly.

Goals

  • The main goal of the Trojan Outreach swim club is to provide a zero cost after-school program to keep more children in Los Angeles active, and teach them the basics of water safety and intermediate swimming.
  • We want to provide swim lessons and water safety in South Los Angeles to the majority of low-income children, interested in swimming
  • Help lower the drowning rate in Los Angeles by teaching more children the basics of water safety, and swimming.
  • Provide an intermediate swim team that will have prospects to swim competitively in high school and college.

@ BWIAB you forget that these kids are in middle school- they are not ready for an intense competitive environment (yet!).

Please vote for us in the grant contest! All of us know how important swimming is, so let’s all band together and vote so we can continue to give these kids a chance to swim. We all know the benefits of swimming, like body confidence, dedication, and perseverance, so please vote so we can pass those skills on to these kids!

I realize these kids are in middle school. I also realize that the Trojan Swim Club is a not for profit public benefit corporation, but does not allow open access which would benefit the public.

Sounds great, but what happens when these same athletes want to JOIN the Trojan Swim Club?
