There wasn’t a ton going on in the first prelims session of the 2014 American Short Course Championships, which is a combination of a club meet and an NCAA Last Chance meet, but the men’s 50 free nationally continues to ‘step up’ headed toward the big selection day next Wednesday.
In prelims of the race, Texas A&M’s Kyle Troskot swam a 19.32, Texas’ John Murray swam a 19.40, and Texas A&M freshman Cory Bolleter swam a 19.41.
As of now, it looks like all three of those times will get in – and Troskot surely will as his swim was an NCAA Automatic Qualifying Time. But now, we’re close to being able to safely say that it will take under 19.50, after Pac 12’s are done, to earn an invite to NCAA’s in the 50 free. That should make for some wild prelims and finals rounds in Austin.
For Troskot, that swim will be a bit of a relief – he’s had a phenomenal season, but at SEC’s didn’t quite hit the times he expected in a lot of his swims.
That was the only swim that’s likely to be a new qualifier out of this meet, but the non-collegiate regiment did put in a few really good times.
Jason O’Brien from North Coast Aquatics, a USC commit, swam a lifetime best of 4:19.58 in the 500 yard freestyle. That’s a five-second improvement for him off of his lifetime best.
In the women’s 50 free, Abbey Weitzeil from the Canyons Aquatic Club, who swam a 22.09 in the 50 yard free. That put her just ahead of Texas post-grad swimmer Sarah Bateman, who was a 22.17 for second. Bateman took a little time away from training after completing her eligibility at Florida, but now in Austin for graduate school anyway, she has resumed training there and is swimming very well.
Another Canyons junior Tamara Santoyo was 3rd in 23.19.
And finally, two pros won races – Laura Sogar was a 1:59.11 in the 200 IM to beat Abby Duncan’s 2:00.90; and Austin Surhoff won the men’s 200 IM in 1:48.05

Gulliver girls have three in the finals in the 500 free and another in 11th place. Great going Gulliver.
Both Kyle and Cory went under the school record. Exciting swims for sure.

Hate to burst bubble, but 19.30 is the A cut… Otherwise, amazing swims nonetheless!!
Bob – incorrect, the A cut time is 19.32. At least according to every official document that the NCAA has sent out and the NCAA times database.
It was 19.30 last year, and I’ve seen some other places on the web where it’s still listed as such, but for now we’re going with what the NCAA is using in its times database, which is 19.32. Note that Pac 12’s seems to be using last year’s standards in their official results as well.

So for those looking to see a school have a qualified relay and no invited swimmers, the odds just increased that Georgia Tech might end up that way. They have a QS time in the 800 FR, but their best individual is Andrew Kosic. He was 24th in the 50 and 21st in the 100 Free starting today. The 100 should get him in, but he just got pushed down by three people in the 50 and Pac-12s are still to swim both the 50 and 100. 42.84, should get him in, but it is possible if there are limited scratches in the 100 and a few more are included above him (Tandy, Messerschmidt are obvious but you would need… Read more »
Whoa – I believe Troskot’s time is an A&M school record. Whoop! And it’s great to see John Murray drop so much time – I think that is his lifetime best by a couple of tenths. Great swim!
