Two Pairs Win Mixed Synchronized Diving National Titles

Team USA continued to secure spots for the 2017 FINA World Championships Friday at the 2017 USA Diving Synchronized National Championships as Lauren Reedy and Briadam Herrera won the mixed synchronized 3-meter event, and Tarrin Gilliland and Andrew Capobiancotopped the mixed synchronized 10-meter field. Both pairs will represent Team USA this summer in Budapest, Hungary, July 14-22 in their respective events.

The mixed synchronized 3-meter event provided a drama-filled final as Herrera and Reedy won by 2.28 points with the top score of 285.66. In order to qualify for world championships, the pair had to score a minimum of 284.00. Jordan Windle and Maria Coburn came in second with a total of 283.38, with Max Flory and Brooke Schultz finishing third at 274.17. Herrera and Reedy capitalized on a forward 2½ somersault 2 twist pike in the fourth round with a score of 71.40. Olympian Kassidy Cook finished fourth with Joseph Cifelliand fifth with Cameron Thatcher.

Gilliland and Capobianco produced a victory in the mixed synchronized 10-meter event, crafting a score of 311.10 to solidify at a spot in the world championships. They saved their best dive for last, notching a score of 75.84 on a back 2½ somersault 1½ twist pike to breach the 284.00-point minimum needed to qualify for Budapest. The pair topped second-place finishers Benjamin Bramley and 2016 Olympian Katrina Young who amassed 302.16 points. Sophia McAfee and Colten Youngt ook third with 249.66.

Junior Pan American slots were on the line for the top synchronized pair in both the girl’s and boy’s 14-18 synchronized 3-meter events. Anne Fowler and Carolina Sculti owned the top spot in the women’s event with 640.32, followed by Emily Grund and Hailey Hernandez at 594.84 points and Mayson Richards and Bridget O’Neil taking third with a score of 577.83. The boy’s title went to Lyle Yost and Noah Duperre with a total of 651.00. Andrew Gawin-Parigini and Colten Young finished in second at 624.30 with Maxwell Weinrich and Tyler Downs placing third with 609.03 points.

Other finals included the girl’s and boy’s 13&U platform events. Elena Yeh and Supisara Shauntel Lim took first in the girl’s field with 432.30 as Grace Austin and Chloe McKnight finished second at 370.50 and Morgan Manley and Geneva Paulythird with 350.64. The boy’s title went to Dash Glasberg and Joshua Thai with a top score of 468.42, followed by Maxwell Miller and Jacob Jones at 463.80, and Max Fowler and Finnian Gelbach claiming third with 434.70 points.

The 2017 USA Diving Synchronized National Championships continue through April 15 at the McAuley Aquatic Center on the campus of Georgia Tech, the same pool that hosted aquatic events at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. Tomorrow’sevents begin at 9:00 a.m. ET featuring the boy’s 13&U synchronized 1-meter, girl’s 13&U synchronized 3-meter, girl’s 14-18 synchronized platform and the boy’s 14-18 synchronized platform.
