Two Silvers Already, Aussie Emma McKeon Attempts To ‘Stay Relaxed’

2017 FINA WORLD SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Australian Olympian Emma McKeon already made her mark on these world championships by helping her nation win silver in the 4×100 freestyle relay and by also taking silver in the women’s 100m butterfly event behind Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom. When landing on the podium for the fly race, McKeon also notched new national and Commonwealth Records, further solidifying the swimmer as a true star down under.

The 23-year-old is ready to take on her 2nd individual event, the women’s 200m freestyle, where McKeon will vie for a spot in the final. The Olympic bronze medalist in this event will battle against Italy’s Federica Pellegrini, America’s Katie Ledecky and the host country’s darling Katinka Hosszu to notch as good a lane as she can to set herself up for success tomorrow night.

McKeon is still charged up from her victory last night, saying “I don’t really feel too tired, although I didn’t get much sleep last night, I was really excited.

This morning was just about getting into the semi and then tonight just getting to the final in as much of a centre lane as I can, but whatever lane I end up in is fine.”

The Brisbane-based swimmer enters tonight’s semi-final as the 4th-seeded swimmer, having clocked a solid morning outing of 1:56.61.

“Because I have such a big week ahead, it’s just about staying relaxed and not wasting too much energy and I think I’m doing pretty well with that so far.

“It felt like a good swim this morning, pretty relaxed and I’m excited to get a bit faster tonight,” McKeon said.

We’ll see how McKeon fares tonight in Budapest, where the women’s 200m freestyle semi-finals are the 6th event on the docket.

IMO the most underrated Aussie swimmer. She was their top performer at the Olympics and looks to be on track for the same here. Unlike some of her teammates she shows up when she needs to.
