Two-Sport Athlete Garrett Sutton Sends Verbal Commitment to Utes

McMinnville, Oregon’s Garrett Sutton has verbally committed to swim for the University of Utah next fall. He will join fellow commits Andrew Britton, Ben Waterman, Cole Giandinoto, and Harrison Wayner in the Utes’ class of 2022.

Sutton swims for McMinnville Swim Club and McMinnville High School. He won the Oregon High School 6A State Championships in the 50 freestyle with 20.71 in February. Two weeks later, he won the Oregon Swimming Senior Champs with 20.38 in the 50 free and 45.82 in the 100 free, both personal-best times. In August he won the 50m free at Western Zones Senior Championships with 23.90.

McMinnville Swim Club head coach Murilo Martins thinks this is just the beginning of a successful swimming college career for Sutton: “Garrett is fairly new to year-round competitive swimming. After playing baseball during his freshman and sophomore years, this is only his second year of full-time year-round swimming. It is not every day that a small town team sends a swimmer to a PAC-12 school so our whole community is very excited for Garrett.”

Top SCY times:

  • 50 free – 20.38
  • 100 free – 45.82
  • 200 free – 1:43.53

If you have a commitment to report, please send an email with a photo (landscape, or horizontal, looks best) and a quote to [email protected].

There are a number of these “late bloomers” who come to the collegiate level with a lot of “tread” left on their ties. Wishing him well and wishing more coaches would take a chance on these athletes!
