Two Swimmers From Poland and Kyrgyzstan Receive Doping Sanctions

13 year-old swimmer from Kyrgyzstan, Vladislav Shuliko, has been handed a 1 year sanction by the The Kyrgyz Republic Swimming Federation, effective October 28, 2013, following a doping control test at the 3rd Eaurasian Games held in Almaty, Kyrgyzstan on September 18, 2013.

Shuliko only tested positive for one substance, Methylhexaneamine, a Class S.6.b Specified Stimulant.

Shuliko is only 13, and therefore does not have a large international reputation yet, but we were able to find that he scored in several events at the Dubai International Swimming Championships earlier this year. He was second in the 50m butterfly at 29.64, was 27.89 in the 50m freestyle, and 1:02.56 in the 100m freestyle.

Methylhexaneamine is commonly used as a nasal decongestant and a weight loss supplement. This is a relatively new outlawed substance, having been banned by WADA only beginning in 2010, but it has already caused a huge number of positive tests across all sports.

18 year-old Polish backstroker Katarzyna Gorniak has been handed a 6 month sanction by the Polish Swimming Federation, effective July 21, 2013, following a doping control test at the Nationwide Youth Olympics in Drzonkow, Poland.

Gorniak tested positive for two substances: Beta-methylphenylethylamine and Oxylofryna, both are Class S.6.b Specified Stimulants.

Gorniak earned a third place finish at the 2011 European Junior Championships in the 50 backstroke, has best times of 29.13 in the 50m backstroke and 1:02.56 in the 100m backstroke. In 2012, she competed in the European Championships in the 50 and 100 freestyle events, but finished 52nd in both.

She is the first athlete to test positive for this substance in 2013. There were no FINA reports of these substances in 2012 either. Beta-methylphenylethylamine is believed to increase wakefulness, improve physical activity, and decrease appetite. Oxylofryna is used to treat low blood pressure, although it is not widely used in the UK and is not a licensed drug in the US.

The last polish swimmer to test positive for banned substances was Jakub Jonczyk on June 15, 2013.
