For more commitment articles, be sure to check out SwimSwam’s College Recruiting channel.

Freestyler Karl Bishop of the Sea Dog Swim Club will stay in state and join the University of Connecticut Huskies next fall. The senior at Cheshire High School was a two-time champion at the 2014-15 Connecticut Boys Open State Championships in the 200-yard free (1:41.44) and the 500-yard free (4:33.79).

This past summer, Bishop competed at the Junior National Champs, where he placed 19th in the 1500 LCM freestyle (15:56.90). He has also qualified for the SCY Winter Juniors in the 1000-yard freestyle.

“I am looking forward to making a contribution to the team. It means a lot to me to be able to compete for my home state. When I visited UCONN I immediately felt a connection and a comradery with the team and coaches and this is where I can see myself succeeding both academically and athletically. I will be joining my fellow Seadog club team member Matt Dagenais at UCONN which is also exciting to me. Go Huskies!”

Bishop’s lifetime best times are:

  • 100-yard freestyle: 49.07
  • 200-yard freestyle: 1:41.44
  • 500-yard freestyle: 4:33.69
  • 1000-yard freestyle: 9:21.19
  • 1650-yard freestyle: 15:36.38

Bishop’s best times would have given him three spots in the finals at the 2015 AAC Championships. His best times would have placed him 4th in the 1650-yard free A-final, 6th in the 500-yard free B-final and an 8th in the B-final of the 200-yard free.
