Two-Time NCAA Championship Qualifier Josh Dannhauser Transfers to Wisconsin

After entering the NCAA transfer portal last fall, Josh Dannhauser has decided that he will continue his collegiate swimming career at the University of Wisconsin. He is scheduled for 2 more years of collegiate competition.

Dannhauser, who is a native of South Africa, is an NCAA qualifier in the distance freestyles. In his last collegiate season in 2018-2019, he finished 25th in the 1650 yard freestyle at the NCAA Championship meet.

In 2 seasons at Auburn, he was a 2-time NCAA Championship qualifier and was a member of the 2018 SEC All-Freshman Team. As a sophomore, he scored 45 points at the SEC Championships via a 7th-place finish in the 500 free and an 8th-place finish in the 1650 free

  • 500y free – 4:16.78
  • 1650y free – 14:52.29

His times should make him an immediate A finalists for Wisconsin at the Big Ten Championships, which is crucial as they’re graduating Cam Tysoe, who was 4th at Big Tens in the 500 free last season. Dannhauser will have, among others, Matthew Hillmer to train alongside next year in Madison. Hillmer was 6th at Big Tens in the 1650 free with a time of 15:00.25. That was a 9-second improvement for him from his freshman season.

Dannhauser will arrive along with a class of 2020 for the Badgers that was ranked as an ‘honorable mention’ last week for best recruiting classes in the country. That class includes incoming freshman Jude Williams, who has best times of 1:37.7, 4:21, and 15:07 in the 200, 500, and 1650 yard freestyles.

Dannhauser/Williams + the young but already good Hillmer/Neimann/Leuthold training group + Waechter/Lindorfer etc on the women’s side + Tysoe/McHugh as pros = that’s one scary D group Posegay is building.

So did he have to sit out a year or was skipping the 2019-2020 season his choice? Best wishes as he continues his career.
