Adam Shelton has verbally committed in state and will join the University of Utah Utes next fall. The two-time 2014-15 Utah 4A State Champion won the 50-yard free in a time of 21.15 and the 100-yard back in a time of 51.97.

Shelton shares a bit of his background, he says, “My love for swimming competitively didn’t come until my very first practice. Before that I had been playing baseball for as long as I can remember and until I started swimming I thought baseball would be what I would play in college. I had made the baseball all-star team multiple times, but during my first swim practice I fell in love with the sport. When it came time to swim in high school I knew then I had to make a choice between the sport I had grown up playing (baseball), and the sport I truly loved (swimming). I chose swimming. And since I started swimming high school in 9th grade its always been my dream to swim for the U. ”

Shelton’s best times in SCY are:

  • 50 free: 21.15
  • 100 free: 46.26
  • 200 free: 1:46.35
  • 100 back: 51.97
  • 200 back: 1:56.72

“My family bleeds a dark red. My mother is an alumni along with my grandfather and almost all my family on my mothers side. So when it came time for me to decide it was actually quite hard. I almost wanted to break tradition and try something new. But after going on my recruiting trip to the U I knew it was the right fit for me. The team was great and I feel I really connected well with them. I am proud to be a third generation Ute and can’t wait to become a part of this close family. I’m very excited to swim in the Pac-12 conference and train under these amazing coaches!” – Shelton

Since 2014, Shelton has dropped almost a full second in the 50-yard free and more than 3 seconds in the 100-yard free. If this progression continues, he will make a big impact for the Utes next season.

Shelton will join new Colorado 5A State Champion Brody Lewis in the Utes class of 2020.
