The 2019 German Short Course National Championships begin on Thursday, November 14th in Berlin, with the competition representing the final opportunity for swimmers to gain European Short Course Championships qualification. The minimum time standards needing to be met for each event are in the table at the end of this post.

New York Breakers International Swimming League (ISL) members Marius Kusch and Marco Koch will not be present at this meet, most likely instead competing at the ISL Derby in Washington, DC. However, there are plenty of senior and junior talent waiting to make their mark on this competition, including World Championships medalists and European Junior Championships medalists.

On the senior circuit, two-time World Champion Florian Wellbrock will be leading the men’s field, taking on the 200m, 400m, 800m, and 1500m freestyle events. He’ll be joined by Gwangju medalist Sarah Kohler, who is set to contest the same spread of events for the women.

Additional swimmers who were present in Gwangju that will be competing at these German Nationals this weekend include Christian Diener, Philip Heintz, Anna Elendt and Franziska Hentke.

For the younger set, European Junior Champions Artem Selin, Isabel Gose and Zoe Vogelmann are slated to race, along with fellow Kazan medalists Sven Schwarz, Luca Armbruster and Maya Tobehn.

There used to be a time, not too long ago, when there would have been 50+ German swimmers on the list of people who had a legitimate chance of making that team. Now there are… 8. Germany used to be a force to be reckoned with in the relays, now they can’t even get enough 4 swimmers to enter the heats. It’s just really sad.
