U.S. World Championship Team Member Added To U.S. SafeSport Database

A member of the American team scheduled to compete at the 2022 World Championships next month has been added to the U.S. Center for SafeSport database.

Trenton Julian, who is slated to represent the U.S. in the men’s 200 butterfly and 800 freestyle relay at the World Aquatics Championships next month in Budapest, was added to the database on May 17.

Julian, 23, is currently listed under “Allegations of Misconduct” and is facing temporary restrictions.

The restrictions listed by SafeSport are: “Coaching / Training Restriction(s), Electronic Device Restriction(s), No Unsupervised Coaching / Training, Contact / Communication Limitation(s)”

USA Swimming told SwimSwam that Julian’s ability to represent the United States at the World Championships won’t be affected by the Center’s temporary measures.

A coach or athlete can be listed on the database for a variety of reasons. A complaint of misconduct can trigger the investigative process, but the Center has the ability to initiate the process without a formal report.

The SafeSport process is not exclusively for incidents and allegations of child abuse, and can involve many different violations of the SafeSport Code. Being arrested or formally charged with a crime is itself a SafeSport violation and can trigger an investigation.

The adjudicating body for Julian’s listing is the U.S. Center for SafeSport (rather than USA Swimming).

The Center exercises exclusive jurisdiction over all forms of sexual misconduct and/or child abuse of a criminal nature, whereas the various forms of physical and/or emotional abuse fall within the Center’s disciplinary jurisdiction.

The Center typically exercises jurisdiction over allegations in its discretionary jurisdiction when they either involve more egregious forms of misconduct (e.g. hazing or physical misconduct resulting in severe injury or death) or when they present a potential conflict of interest with the national governing body or the USOPC.

Julian placed second in the men’s 200 fly at the 2022 U.S. Trials in Greensboro, producing a lifetime best time of 1:54.22 to qualify for his first Long Course World Championship team. He would go on to finish fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:46.69), earning him a berth on the American men’s 800 free relay at Worlds.

He also finished third in the 100 fly (51.10) and fourth in the 200 IM (1:58.42).

Julian recently wrapped up a four-year collegiate career at the University of California, Berkeley, helping the Golden Bears to a pair of team championship titles in 2019 and 2022.

He also owns two gold medals and one silver from the 2021 Short Course World Championships in Abu Dhabi, and won gold as a member of the U.S. men’s 800 free relay at the 2019 World University Games.

Julian recently announced that he would be joining the new pro group at Mission Viejo, where his father, Jeff Julian, is the head coach, following the World Championships and his graduation from Cal.

The swimming portion of the 2022 World Aquatics Championships will run from June 18-25 in Budapest, Hungary.

The U.S. team is scheduled to attend a training camp prior to the competition in Croatia beginning on June 4.

SwimSwam has reached out to Julian for more information.

I hope the offense is not sexual in nature. That would be really disappointing.Good thing, my Seli is a real gentleman.

Allegations are not facts..yet. today, people can be accused of misconduct by just an innocent phrase that someone finds offensive. I find this thread unsettling..especially the veiled ” I am not saying he’s guilty, but….” salacious gossip.

Susan, you have this so right. I have known this guy since he was a little boy. Definitely not a rule breaker. Whoever made the allegation is a bold face liar.

I really hope the worlds team isn’t being as left in the dark as the public is.

Electronic device indicates not minor. I hope he isn’t getting special treatment just because he is an athlete, compared to how an average citizen would be dealt with.

Can he fly to Europe with an electronic device. Will Croatia and Hungary let him into their countries?

I don’t think that he necessarily has to wear an electric device. I think that the restriction indicates that he is restricted from using certain electronic devices (his phone, for example) to communicate with certain people.

Why does the electronic device restriction indicate that the victim is not a minor?

Huh? I think you’re reading the comment wrong. @Chlorinetherapy is saying an electronic device restriction implies whatever he’s in trouble for is not a “minor” infraction. Meaning, he must’ve done something pretty alarming if he has an electronic device restriction.

Yep, I see that interpretation now. Thanks for responding.

There was no victim. The allegations are a lie.

Any reason why Julian is allowed to compete and only under temporary restrictions, while Windle was temporarily suspended? Seems weird given how serious this sounds.

Can’t write a rule where one accusation with no proof gets you kicked out of competition. Someone could allege (insert top US swimmer) did something the week of 2024 olympic trials. You can’t bench someone for a simple accusation. With that said, if lines were crossed, and it is proven, he should be banned for life and put behind bars

said in another comment that this has been going around since at least March.

That says to me they’ve been looking at this for at least 2 months before deciding there was enough ‘there’ there to at a minimum restrict his activities.

It is not a simple accusation.

Than what is it. To be added to the database it has to have substance. I’m tired of everyone skating around this. I would be concerned as a female swimmer. Sorry but it’s true. If he’s innocent than say it.

It does not have substance. Safe Sport has it wrong.

That’s not how this works.

He’ll be traveling with minors to worlds. This doesn’t feel right. Much much different than some public intoxication citation in Texas.

HJones

Unfortunately, what he’s alleged to have done isn’t low scale, and it’s pretty disgusting. If he’s found to be in violation, then he might be banned for life based on the precedent of past cases. I’m not saying he’s guilty, but people should know that he’s being accused of some stuff that isn’t trivial.

His SafeSport entry lists “Coaching / Training Restriction(s), Electronic Device Restriction(s), No Unsupervised Coaching / Training, Contact / Communication Limitation(s)”, which certainly seems pretty ominous.

This coy little game you’re playing in this thread is tiresome. Hey you heard some gossip — good for you. Please save SwimSwam and its readers some bandwidth and stop trying to impress everyone with how in the loop you are.
