UBC Takes Both Women’s and Men’s Canada West Titles

After the second evening of the Canada West University Championships the University of Calgary had a lead in both the women’s and men’s team point standings that all changed after the final day of competition. The UBC Thunderbirds took over the top spot in both the women’s and men’s team scores winning the meet in both categories.

Women’s Standings:

1. University of British Columbia – 832

3. University of Alberta – 407

Men’s Standings:

1. University of British Columbia – 800
2. University of Calgary – 768
3. University of Alberta – 607.5

UBC’s Keegan Zanatta did his part to help the men earn the team title winning two events on Sunday evening. Zanatta took the 100 freestyle in a time of 50.31 and followed that up with a win in the 400 freestyle posting a time of 3:47.54. With those wins Zanatta took every freestyle event except for the 50.

Jonathan Brown also added to the UBC point total winning the men’s 200 IM by over three seconds recording a time of 1:59.23. Brown’s time was only 16 one-hundredths of a second off of the Canada West record.

Joe Byram and Nick Kostiuk of the University of Alberta completed the sweep of the backstroke and breaststroke events. Byram took the 100 backstroke in a time of 54.56 while Kostiuk won the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:11.47.

Christian Ng of the University of Calgary took the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:01.07.

The men’s events concluded with the 400 medley relay. This was the only relay that UBC did not win as the University of Alberta took the event in a time of 3:39.41.

Tera Van Beilen won the women’s 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:22.45. Van Beilen’s time ties her with Russian Sofya Andreeva for the ninth place position in the world rankings.

Van Beilen’s teammates Jacomie Strydom, Maia Brundage, Rebecca Terejko and Erin Stamp also won events on the final day of competition. Strydom took the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:11.62 nearly three seconds ahead of the field. Brundage won the 400 freestyle in a time of 4:10.49 almost seven seconds ahead of the field. Terejko took the 100 freestyle in a time of 55.33 while Stamp won the 200 IM in a time of 2:10.09.

Leah Smal of the University of Calgary prevented UBC from sweeping the women’s events winning the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:01.76.

The UBC women took the 400 medley relay in a time of 4:04.07.
