UC Davis Women, BYU Men Claim Team Titles at MPSF Championships

Final Results

1650 Yard Freestyle

The final session of the 2016 MPSF Championships began with the fastest heats of the women’s and men’s 1650. Hawaii sophomore Kira Webster won the women’s event in 16:44.35, just ahead of Pacific’s Jana Burkard (16:46.68). Third place went to Cherelle Oestringer, a junior at Hawaii, in 16:49.29.

BYU senior Dallin Johnson clocked a winning 15:29.94 in the men’s race; Johnson was 20 seconds faster than he’d been a year ago, when he had finished tenth. Pearu Pold of Cal Poly finished second with 15:33.61. Santa Barbara freshman Logan Hotchkiss took third in 15:35.37.

200 Yard Backstroke

UC Davis freshman Solie Laughlin earned her third title of the meet with a 1:56.64 rout in the 200 back. Laughlin also won the 100 back and 400 IM. Santa Barbara’s Cheyenne Low was runner-up, 2.5 seconds back with 1:59.07. Tahna Lindquist of Hawaii claimed the bronze with 1:59.36.

For the third year in a row, Brigham Young’s Jake Taylor won the men’s 200 back with a new meet record. Each time he inched closer to David Nolan’s pool record of 1:40.70; this year Taylor clocked a 1:40.96 to get the win and lower the MPSF record, coming within a fingernail of Nolan’s pool mark. Teammate Preston Jenkins finished second (1:43.75) ahead of 2015 runner-up Billy Mullis of Santa Barbara (1:46.02).

100 Yard Freestyle

Franziska Weidner of Hawaii won her third event of the meet with a 49.31 in the 100 free. Santa Barbara’s Lauren Vosseler took silver in 49.73, while Mia Facey of Davis and Julie Mikota of UCSB tied for third with 50.54 each.

Payton Sorenson of BYU lowered his own meet record, set in prelims with 43.07, to 42.94 in finals. He came to the wall just ahead of Hawaii’s Yuri Samouilich (43.35) and Santa Barbara’s Mason Tittle (44.26).

200 Yard Breaststroke

2015 runner-up, Bri Jurries of USD, took down both the MPSF and pool records in the 200 breast, winning with 2:11.83. In so doing she beat defending champion Katie Records of Santa Barbara (2:14.29) and 2016 100 breast winner Anna Dahl of BYU (2:15.32).

It was BYU senior Richard Stephens who got the win in the men’s race; he clocked a 1:58.01 to edge Yahav Shahaff of University of the Pacific (1:58.54), who won the 100 breast in 52.97, and Simon Wong of Santa Barbara (2:00.66).

200 Yard Butterfly

Defending champion Hilvy Cheung of Davis closed out the individual swimming events with a 1:56.52 win in the 200 fly. Erin McNulty of Hawaii placed second in 1:58.30. BYU’s Lillian Moore rounded out the podium with 2:01.13.

The men’s meet ended with a 1-2 Santa Barbara sweep in the 200 fly. The win went to Chris Nolan (1:46.49), with teammate Eric Vanbrocklin going 1:47.04 for second. Luis Ventura of BYU (1:47.69) took third.

Platform Diving

Hawaii’s Aimee Harrison completed her sweep of all three diving events with 241.05 points and a win in the platform. BYU’s Alex Kottcamp was runner-up with 239.20, while Hawaii’s Lauren Hall picked up third place with 237.85.

Amund Gismervik of Hawaii scored 387.65 points to win the men’s platform event. Kevin Dreesen of BYU, who had won both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards this year, came in second with 340.50 points. Hawaii’s Johan Sandell was third with 284.40.

400 Yard Free Relay

Santa Barbara (3:19.94) broke the meet record in the 400 free relay, coming to the wall ahead of Davis and San Diego.

BYU broke the men’s meet record by nearly two seconds with their 2:53.11 win. Pacific claimed the silver with 2:55.15, ahead of Cal Poly.
