UC Davis Women Edge UCSB Gauchos

The Aggies narrowly outscored the host Lady Gauchos 139 to 123 in their close MPSF duel Saturday. Points were tight, with the win coming down to the final 400 Free Relay at the end of the meet.

To kick off the meet, the UCSB A team took the 200 Medley relay (1:46.37) ahead of Davis’ A team (1:48.98). UCSB’s B (1:49.25) and C team (1:51.23) followed up for third and fourth, respectively.

Junior Aggie Marissa Brown took the 1000 Free in 10:26.06 to kick off the meet. Gaucho Reid Whaley touched second (10:40.54) ahead of UC Davis senior Sam Rados (10:48.83). Her freshman teammate Angelica Nowack finished just behind for fourth in 10:51.89.

The Aggies completed a 1-2 sweep in the 200 Free, with teammates Samantha Shellem (1:51.84) and Kirsten Brand (1:53.79) taking first and second. Third was UCSB senior Micaela Velasquez in 1:54.65.

UC Davis kept the momentum up with a win in the 100 Back from senior Hilary Hunt (56.64). She touched ahead of UCSB’s Julia Mikota (57.61) and her Davis teammate Aislinn Dresel (58.55).

The Gauchos responded with a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 Breast led by Jiana Vargem (1:05.58). Her teammates Katie Records (1:05.72) and Carissa Metcalf (1:05.74) took second and third, respectively, separated by just two one-hundredths of a second.

The event wins continued to flip, with the Aggies taking a sweep in the 200 Fly. Sophomore Hilvy Cheung touched first in 2:01.81, almost six seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Touching second was her teammate Megan Leung in 2:07.30 ahead of UCSB’s Alyssa Shew (2:07.98).

UCSB picked up another 1-2 sweep in the 50 Free, led by Lauren Vosseler (24.07). Her teammate Julia Mikota took second in 24.61 ahead of Aggie Courtney Schultz (24.84).

UC Davis’ Samantha Shellem took the 100 Free in 52.01 ahead of a 2-3-4-5 Gaucho finish led by Julia Mikota (52.68). Her Gaucho teammates Hollace Barden (53.20), Hope Curran (53.44) and Meghan Bicomong (53.53) rounded out the rest of the field.

Aggie Hilary Hunt completed a sweep of the backstroke events with a win in the 200 Back (2:04.86) ahead of Gaucho Elizabeth Pulido (2:07.35). Pulido touched just ahead of UC Davis freshman Aislinn Dresel (2:07.53).

UCSB completed another commanding sweep of the 200 Breast, taking first through fourth place. Gaucho freshman Alyssa Shew took the top spot, swimming to a 2:20.96 ahead of teammate Jiana Vargem (2:21.40). Gauchos Carissa Metcalf (2:22.03) and Kathleen Benjamin (2:25.08) touched third and fourth, respectively.

The Aggies took the first, second and fourth places in the 500 Free, with Samantha Shellem touching first in 5:01.90. Her teammate Kirsten Brand was less than three tenths of a second behind for second in 5:02.17. UCSB’s Heren Alanis was just behind for third in 5:02.94 ahead of UC Davis’ Marissa Brown (5:04.36).

UC Davis teammates Hilvy Cheung (56.17) and Megan Leung (57.42) completed a 1-2 Aggie sweep in the 100 Fly. Gaucho Jaime Dang finished just behind for third in 57.75.

UCSB senior Katie Records took the 200 IM for the Gauchos in 2:06.08 ahead of Davis’ Hilvy Cheung (2:07.72). Records’ teammate Heren Alanis followed up for third in 2:08.58.

The UC Davis A team (3:29.92) edged the Gaucho A team (3:30.32) by four tenths of a second in the 400 Free relay. UCSB’s B team took third in 3:33.31.
