UC San Diego Celebrates Senior Day As Women Down San Diego, Men Fall To Cal

LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego women’s swim defeated University San Diego while the men fell to No. 2 Cal on Saturday afternoon at Canyonview Aquatic Center. Prior to the meet, 12 Triton seniors were celebrated for their contributions to the school program.

The Triton women posted 165 points to the Toreros’ 120. On the men’s side, the Golden Bears scored 145 points with the Triton men posting 120.

ON THE WOMEN’S SIDE
The Triton women opened the meet with a first and second place finish in the 200 yard medley relay with the A relay team posting a time of 1:43.34 and the B relay team posting 1:47.32. Teagan MonroeChloe BraunMiranda Renner, and Josette Odgers made up the first-place finishing team.

The Tritons went one, two, three, four in the 200 free with Sophia Bell leading the way with a time of 1:49.99. She was followed by Minh-Nha KawamuraAudrey Moore, and Sophie Francis. In the 100 back, Asia Kozan led Teagan Monroe and Iris Bayan as the gold and blue took first, second, and third respectively. Kozan posted a time of 57.06.

Juli Arzave kept the winning going with a decisive win in the 1000 freestyle, finishing at 10:21.68, a full 28 seconds ahead of second place. Braun took another win in the 100 breast with a time of 1:04.07 followed by teammate Jana Jocic in second place. Alisa Rangel and Gabi Icheva took first and second in the 200 fly.

Renner tallied another first place finish in the 50 free with a time of 23.74 and was followed by Odgers in second who finished at 23.90. Swimming the 100 free, Odgers earned a first-place finish with a time of 52.61. She was followed by Bianca Fernandez who finished with a time of 52.64. Bayan earned a win in the 200 back, posting 2:06.65 as her finishing time.

Another first-place finish came in the 200 breast when Jocic took first and was followed by Eva Boehlke. Bell and Francis took first and second in the 500 free finishing within ten seconds of one another. Kozan led the way again for first, second, third, and fourth as the gold and blue swept the 100 fly. Kawamura, Sanne Dequine, and Teagan Monroe followed the freshman to take the event.

ON THE MEN’S SIDE
Posting the first win of the day, Devin Esser tackled the 1000 free with a time of 9:23.75 to edge out his teammate Jackson Bernstein by two seconds. The junior came within three seconds of the 12-year-old program record. In the 200 free, Andrija Petkovic finished with a time of 1:37.76 to take first place by two seconds from Cal. Ryan Kirton and Luigi Franco finished in third and fourth behind the senior.

Finishing third in the 100 back, Nathan Lee posted a time of 49.72 and earned a NIC Bonus cut. Luke Pusateri took second with a time of 55.00 in the 100 breast. Battling for the finish, Yuma Dugas finished second in the 200 fly with a time of 1:49.68. In the 50 free, Logan Lakis took third place in the 50 free with a time of 20.99. The first three places all finished in the 20 second mark at 20.27, 20.69, and 20.99.

In the 100 free, Petkovic tallied another first-place finish with a time of 44.67. Pusateri finished second in the 200 breast posting 2:01.49 for his finishing time. Esser and Bernstein went one and two again in the 500 free finishing within seconds of one another. Chad Morrison and Dugas tied at 49.45 in the 100 fly for a second-place finish. Adrian Bellido followed the upperclassmen to take third with a time of 49.64.

Lee wrapped the individual events with a first-place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 1:49.22. The Triton men ended the day taking second in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:00.77. Kirton, Petkovic, Aidan Rikic, and Zach Elian made up the relay team.

UP NEXT
The Triton men will compete in the Triton Invitational along with Cal at Southwestern College on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. The Triton women will compete next at MPSF Conference Championships at the end February.
