UC Santa Barbara Men & Women Claim Top Spot At CSUB Sprint Invite

Bakersfield, Calif.- UCSB’s men and women’s swimming continue to demonstrate their dominance as they emerge victorious in the CSU Bakersfield Sprint Classic. The women finished with 506 points, 204 points ahead of runner-up, Cal. Baptist University. Similarly, the men finished with 455 points, 183 points ahead of second-place UC Davis.

The Gaucho women took first in all of the relay races. The 200 Medley Relay, consisting of Nina Statler, Ashley Ray, Samantha Banos, and Reagan Nibarger, finished with a time of 1:43.70. The 200 Free Relay was swam by Statler, Ray, Hannah Joseph, and Nibarger finished in 1:35.24. Once again led by Statler, the 800 Free Relay finished in 7:29.95 with Samantha Banos, Nibarger, and Paige Gambetta swimming legs.

Additionally, Statler finished second in 50 Back(25.83) and third in the 50 Fly with a time of 25.89. Banos took second in the 50 Fly(25.72) and 200 IM(2:05.82). Nibarger finished second in the 50 Free(24.10). Tyryn Empresilapa finished third in the 50 Fly(25.89) and in the 200 IM(2:06.57).

On the distance end, Maelynn Lawrence (5:03.71) and Isabella Martinez-Spener (5:03.83) finished second and third in the 500 Free.

The Gaucho men also saw great success today, taking first in the 800 Free Relay and 200 Free Relay. The 800 Free Relay, consisting of Austin SparrowDominic Falcon, Matt Vinh, and Justin Wong, finished with a time of 6:39.06. The 200 Free Relay was swam by Sparrow, Matthew DriscollJustin Wong, and Sean Gutowski, and touched at 1:23.50. The 200 Medley Relay team, consisting of Driscoll, Alec Cullen, Wong, and Sparrow, finished second in 1:32.07.

Regarding the individual events, Cullen took first(25.64) while Henry Adamson finished third(26.11) in the 50 Breast. UCSB also took the top four spots 200 IM with Kyle Brill(1:49.81), Falcon(1:52.14), Driscoll(1.52.49), and Aiden Benjamin(1:53.93) finishing first, second, third, and fourth respectively. Furthermore, Brill finished second in the 50 Back(23.52) and Driscoll took third in the 50 Free(21.13)

On the distance Sparrow finished second in the 500 Free (4:29.45) while Vinh took the third spot coming in at 4:34.52.

UCSB will return to action tomorrow, October 15, at Bakersfield in the Roadrunner Invitational at 1pm.
