UCLA Women Post Wins over UCSB and BYU in Tri Meet at UC Santa Barbara

The Bruins won all 14 events at Saturday’s tri-meet against UC Santa Barbara and Brigham Young University in Santa Barbara. The Bruins beat the Gauchos 162-96 and the Cougars 171-87. Meanwhile, hosts UCSB beat the Cougars 164-98.

UCLA took the top two spots in the 200 medley relay, led by a 1:42.57 win from Linnea Mack, Allison Wine, Katie Kinnear, and Monica Dornick. UC Santa Barbara’s Julia Mikota, Katie Records, Allie Stevens, and Lauren Vosseler touched in 1:46.39, while BYU’s Ciera Keller, Anna Dahl, Haley Bertoldo, and Alora Foliaki went 1:48.23.

Katy Campbell logged the first individual win for the Bruins with a 9:56.31 in the 1000 free. Teammate Mary Katherine Kish (10:21.79) finished second, just in front of BYU’s Vanessa Moffatt (10:22.01). UCSB’s Reid Whaley went 10:25.19 for fourth.

Mack of UCLA held off teammate Campbell to win the 200 free in 1:50.50. Teammate Carly Reid (1:52.06) was third. Hope Curran (1:54.59) was the fastest Gaucho, while Kerra Bispo picked up points for the Cougars.

UCLA’s White won both the 100 and 200 backstroke events, putting up a 55.14 and a 2:00.43, respectively. Brigham Young’s Bertoldo came in second in the 100 with 57.68, edging Santa Barbara’s Mikota (57.83). Keller out-touched Bertoldo for third in the 200, 2:06.10 to 2:06.29. UCLA’s Kinnear was second with 2:03.26.

The Bruins’ Wine (1:04.02) eked out a close 100 breast over the Gauchos’ Records (1:04.29). Hannah Hansen (1:08.17) took first among the Cougars. In the 200, Jessica Khojasteh of UCLA picked up the win in 2:19.49, using a fast last 50 to pass UCSB’s Records (2:19.81). The Cougars’ Hanna Skaggs (2:25.11) came in just ahead of teammate Hansen.

Noelle Tarazona of UCLA won both the butterfly events. In the 200, her 2:02.00 was the first in a 1-2-3 Bruin sweep. Anna Quinn (2:03.08) and Kacey Milligan (2:04.38) followed. Moffatt of BYU was next in 2:08.72, while the fastest Gaucho was Madison Tedesco with 2:11.51. In the 100, Tarazona touched in 55.80, while second and third places went to UCSB’s Jaime Dang (57.74) and BYU’s Bertoldo (57.87), respectively.

The Bruins’ Dornick emerged the sprint queen, winning the 50 in 23.67 and the 100 in 51.50. Both times, Vosseler (23.94 and 52.28) was the fastest Gaucho, and Foliaki (24.56 and 53.10), the top Cougar. UCLA’s Katie Grover picked up a second in the 100 with 52.20.

UCLA’s Quinn (5:04.69) came out on top in the 500 free. BYU’s Moffatt and UCSB’s Annie Larsen turned together at the 450 wall but Moffatt brought it home for the second-place touch, going 5:09.08 to Larsen’s 5:09.44.

Arlyn Upshaw (2:05.20) of the Bruins took home first in the 200 IM. Second-place points went to UCSB’s Alyssa Shew (2:09.79) over teammate Jiana Vargem (2:11.87), while BYU’s Bispo (2:13.55) scored at fourth. A whole slew of Bruins exhibitioned the race; fastest among them was Mack (2:08.12).

While UCLA’s 400 free relay team of White, Grover, Khojasteh, and Mack swam an exhibition 3:28.18, Santa Barbara fielded a winning team of Kimmie Kreuzberger, Hollace Barden, Meghan Bicomong, and Vosseler, who combined for 3:29.85. The Cougars finished up with the quartet of Emily Harris, Ashlee Spindler, Keller, and Moffatt. They came in at 3:37.14.
