UConn Pool Records Fall, Lanker Sets Team Record At Husky Invite

This weekend, Northeastern University, Providence College, and Boston College traveled to the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium to take on the University of Connecticut in the Husky Invitational.

The meet followed a time-trial format and served as a last-chance opportunity for some teams to select their conference squads.

Women’s Meet

Northeastern’s Sara Touchette-McGowan had the strongest performance of the meet, winning three events and setting a Wolff-Zackin Natatorium pool record. Her 100 fly record came in at 54.69. Soon after she won the 50 free in 23.77, and her 100 free win, 51.35, was a season best.

The Northeastern women were on a record-setting roll. Delaney Lanker destroyed the Northeastern University record in the 100 IM, winning the event in 59.39. The old record stood for six years, a 1:01.62 set by Jill Kearns in 2010.

Northeastern’s Taylor Ellis took a pair of wins. She won the 50 breast with a season best 29.32 and the 100 breast with 1:04.09.

Her teammates Christine Leong and Madeline Wolf each took a gold as well, with Leong winning the 50 back in 26.28 and Wolf taking the 500 free in a career-best 5:04.95. Carly Schnabel of Northeastern won the 100 back in 58.20.

The UConn Huskies nabbed five first-place finishes at the meet. Senior Laura Ruttan won the 200 IM in 2:11.15, freshman Julie Hu took the top slot in the 400 IM with 4:35.36, junior Emily Caplis won the 200 breast in 2:26.57, sophomore Sophia King finished first in the 50 fly in 26.43, and junior Rachel Mulligan rounded out the UConn wins with 17:39.18 in the 1650 free.

Mary Fitzsimmons, Hope Dragelin, and Madeline Simone posted the highest finishes of the day for the Boston College women. Fitzsimmons won the 200 back in 2:07.57, and Dragelin won the 200 fly in 2:08.74. Simone won the 1000 free in 10:47.85.

Men’s Meet

The men of UConn grabbed nine first place finishes, including a Wolff-Zackin Natatorium pool record 1:49.74 in the 100 fly from senior captain and Germany-native Chris Girg, who represents. Girg was the headliner on the men’s side, also winning the 50 fly in 23.25.

Other first place finishers for UConn included: sophomore Walker Hill in the 50 back with 25.96, senior Jeff Magin in the 50 free with 21.24, captain Greg Baliko in the 100 IM with 52.46, sophomore Patrick Kavanaugh in the 400 IM in 4:10.42, junior James Donlevy in the 50 breast with 26.66, and freshman South Africa native Mark Hunter in the 200 breast with 2:06.89. Ryan Walsh rounded out UConn’s wins with 52.79 in the 100 back.

Boston College’s Denis Reznik doubled up on distance wins, taking the 500 free with 4:42.25 and the 1650 free in 16:44.90.

Matthew Zerweck of Boston College took the top spot in the 200 IM, posting 1:53.52, and Eagle John Mooers won the 100 breast in 58.65, while Estephen Saliba won the 100 fly with 50.76. Conner Futch won the 200 back with 1:54.76. Cole Vanderwel took the 100 free in 47.02, Nico Junghahn won the 200 free in 42.05, and Josh Lacey took first place in the 1000 free with 10:28.07.
