UConn Women Open Spring Season With Home Win Over Seton Hall

Storrs, CT – The University of Connecticut swim and dive team hosted Seton Hall Saturday, beating the Pirates 164-128.

The Huskies won 11 of 16 events with strong performances from several different competitors. Among these was an impressive finish for Kayla Mendonca in the 100y Backstroke.

On training in Florida in preparation for today, Kayla said, “We were focused on sprint work and on technique and details in our races, so I was just trying to focus on that and be positive for the rest of the team as we were focused on going out there and doing our best – not really worrying about the time and getting back to the racing mindset.”

Storrs, Conn. – Seton Hall women’s swimming and diving fought hard in its road meet at UConn on Saturday afternoon, falling by a score of 164-128.

The Pirates recorded five event victories on the day, the first of which came from Cornelia Jerresand (Taeby, Sweden) in the 50 Free. Jerresand posted a time of 24.34 to claim the top spot. The senior would also swim the third leg of the winning 400 Free Relay team. Natalie Heim (Middletown, N.J.), Leiya Istambouli (Danbury, Conn.), Jerresand and Amanda Zajdzinski (Mesa, Ariz.) combined for a winning time of 3:33.81.

Heim also had a strong day in her individual events. The junior claimed first place in the 100 Free with a time of 1:20.00, and also took second in the 200 Free in 1:54.50.

Allie Waggoner (Moorestown, N.J.) notched a pair of top-three finishes in the distance events on the afternoon. The junior took second in the 1000 Free with a time of 10:41.77 before finishing third in the 500 Free, just behind Zajdzinski who was second.

In diving, Nicolette Pawar (Lawrenceville, N.J.) claimed victory in the 1-meter with a total score of 216.60. Pawar recorded the highest scoring dive of the entire meet.

The Pirates will return to action next Saturday as they hit the road to face Delaware at 1 p.m.
