Two championship records highlighted the first day of the 2016 American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships in Houston. SMU’s Bryce Klein bettered the meet record with a score of 400.5 on the 1m boards while Houston’s Micaela Bouter improved the meet record on the 3m boards to 335.65.
UConn’s divers vaulted the Huskies into first place with four athletes finishing in the top 8 on the 3m boards. Senior diver Taryn Urbanus led the Huskies with a second place finish of 326.20.
The SMU women managed to sweep both the 800 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay. The team of Maddie Hoch, Adrienn Santa, Ursa Bezan, and Vicky Cunningham combined to win the 800 free relay with a time of 7:12.78, holding off Cincinnati, despite their 1:43.88 anchor split from junior Jacqueline Keire. Cincinnati finished second with a final time of 7:14.14.
SMU’s team of Tiffany Sudarma, Tara Nichols, Marne Erasmus, and Hannah Rogers defended their 200 medley relay title from last year with a time of 1:38.40. They were just off of the meet record time they set a year ago.
On the men’s side, the ECU men were able to defend their title in the men’s 800 free relay. Their team of Michael Dugan, John Myhre, Fran Krznarik, and Julien Dodu combined for a time of 6:27.91, lowering their time nearly three seconds from last year.
SMU’s Bartosz Krzyzaniak, Ziga Cerkovnik, Sam Straughan, and Christian Scherubl propelled themselves ahead of last year’s champions to win the 200 medley relay. They combined for a final time of 1:27.49, finishing .2 ahead of Eastern Carolina at 1:27.69.
