UCSB Men, Women Split Over Cal Poly

The Gaucho men and women took on the Cal Poly Mustangs in their final duel meet of the 2014-2015 season, with the UCSB men outscoring Cal Poly 169 to 110 and the UCSB women falling 135 to 152.

The UCSB women kicked off the meet with a first-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay (1:45.46) ahead of Cal Poly’s A team (1:48.00). Cal Poly’s B team touched just behind for third in 1:48.52. On the men’s side, the Gauchos took first in 1:31.90 ahead of Cal Poly’s A team (1:32.50).

Cal Poly freshman Bonnie Diamond took the women’s 1000 Free (10:23.63), touching ahead of a 2-3 finish by UCSB teammates Reid Whaley (10:28.16) and Heren Alanis (10:31.52). Gaucho Armen Darbinyan claimed a win in the men’s event (9:37.92). Cal Poly’s Austin Cunniff (9:43.54) and Dustin Bolt (9:44.93) finished second and third, respectively.

The Mustangs took a 1-2 sweep in the women’s 200 Free, with teammates Alisha Bender (1:53.46) and Sophia Kuvan (1:55.05) touching first and second. UCSB junior Hope Curran followed up for third in 1:55.37. On the men’s side, Gaucho teammates Dylan Kubick (1:41.28) and Eddie Sanchez (1:42.07) took a 1-2 sweep. Cal Poly’s Alex Behnam was third in 1:43.47.

Mustang junior Allison de Peralta (57.36) took the 100 Back ahead of a 2-3-4 Gaucho sweep. Second was Julia Mikota (57.94) ahead of her teammates Elizabeth Pulido (58.98) and Reid Whaley (59.06). The Gaucho men claimed a 1-2-3 sweep, with freshman Billy Mullis touching first in 51.04. UCSB’s Albert Miao (51.96) and Joshua Smith (52.74) took second and third.

UCSB senior Carissa Metcalf (1:05.73) out touched Cal Poly’s Sage Speak (1:05.76) by just three one-hundredths of a second. Gaucho Jiana Vargem touched third in 1:06.20. UCSB junior Andres Castilleja took the men’s event in 56.03 ahead of Cal Poly senior Jimmy Deiparine (56.39).

Cal Poly teammates Belen Enguidanos (2:05.60) and Taylor Guy (2:07.34) took the top two spots in the 200 Fly. UCSB freshman Alyssa Shew touched third in 2:07.87. On the men’s side, UCSB teammates Mickey Mowry (1:51.08) and Chris Nolan (1:51.86) took a 1-2 sweep. Cal Poly junior Mickey Mackle followed up for third in 1:52.31.

The Gaucho women took a 1-2-3 sweep in the 50 Free led by junior Lauren Vosseler (23.82). Her teammates Kimmie Kreuzberger (24.35) and Julia Mikota (24.38) touched second and third, respectively. Gaucho senior Wade Allen claimed a win on the men’s side (20.80) ahead of Cal Poly’s Caleb Davies (21.32).

UCSB’s Lauren Voesseler took home another win for the Gauchos in the 100 Free (51.98). Her teammates Hollace Barden (53.09) and Kimmie Kreuzberger (53.16) followed up for second and third. Wade Allen won his second event of the meet in the men’s event (46.02) ahead of his three teammates Chase Lemley (46.87), Chris Dotson (46.92) and Eddie Sanchez (47.02).

Cal Poly sophomore Jessi Modlich took the 200 Back in 2:06.81 ahead of UCSB freshman Elizabeth Pulido (2:07.59). Mustang Allison de Peralta touched just behind for third in 2:07.78. On the men’s side, Gaucho freshman Billy Mullis won his second event of the meet (1:51.34). His teammates Albert Miao (1:55.30) and Joshua Smith (1:56.12) took second and third, respectively.

Mustang freshman Sage Speak took the 200 Breast (2:19.88) ahead of UCSB freshmen Alyssa Shew (2:21.05) and Kathleen Benjamin (2:24.81). UCSB’s Andres Castilleja swept the breaststroke events with a win in the men’s event (2:02.52). Cal Poly senior Paolo Stanchi was second in 2:03.13.

The Cal Poly women took a 1-2 sweep in the 500 Free, with teammates Bonnie Diamond (5:06.24) and Karoline Eckhart (5:07.76) taking first and second. On the men’s side, UCSB sophomore Dylan Kubick touched first (4:37.97) ahead of Cal Poly freshman Pearu-Peeter Pold (4:38.29).

Cal Poly junior Taylor Guy (57.49) touched just ahead of UCSB’s Jaime Dang (57.66) for the win in the 100 Fly. UCSB sophomore Yoessef Tibazi claimed the  win in the men’s event (48.90) ahead of Cal Poly freshman Shannon Fong (50.90).

UCSB freshman Alyssa Shew took the 200 IM in 2:07.98, touching just ahead of Cal Poly junior Allison de Peralta (2:08.34). On the men’s side, Cal Poly junior Mickey Mackle (1:53.03) led a 1-2-3 Mustang finish. His teammates Paolo Stanchi (1:55.36) and Zach Cootes (1:57.62) took second and third, respectively.

The UCSB women finished off the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 400 Free Relay. The Gaucho A team touched in 3:29.94, and the B team swam to second in 3:33.79. The Mustangs swept the top two spots on the men’s side, with the A relay taking home the win in 3:08.39.
