The UNLV men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams competed in a pair of home meets this weekend, first dropping the Friday Night Shoot-Out to the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, before claiming one of four meets on Saturday against Air Force and USCB again.

Friday night’s action, which featured a shorten lineup of events as well as some non-traditional distances, saw the Rebel women fall to the Gauchos by a 164-64 score, while UNLV’s men lost by a 154-74 margin.

Two event winners highlighted the women’s efforts. It began with Ida Schutt in the 300 free, as she won easily in a time of 2:55.51. Schutt then added a second-place finish in the 100 IM with a mark of 1:00.05. The other winner Friday night was Kristina Hendrick, posting first in the 200 IM, out-touching UCSB’s Catherine Boles by 2.14 seconds with a time of 2:06.50 and finishing second in the 50 breast with a time of 29.55.

The story on the men’s side was Tom Paco-Pedroni, claiming two wins. His first was in the 50 breast in a time of 26.20. Next, he swam the fourth leg of the 400 free relay, which topped the Gauchos in a time of 2:59.82. Joining him on the relay were Or Sabatier, Kasey Foley and Forrest Beesley.

“We need to come back today and be ready to swim at the upper limit of our capacity,” said head coach Ben Loorz after Friday’s competition. “The back-to-back meets present a challenging, yet real-life, opportunity for us to perform consistently on consecutive days. We are looking forward to a double-dual on Saturday that will put us up against our two best and oldest rivals.”

Day two for the Rebels concluded with seven victories highlighted by the Rebel women defeating Air Force 156-141. They would go on to lose to UCSB 159.50-126.50, while the men fell to USCB 173-120 and 191-109 to the Falcons.

“Hats off to really strong UCSB and Air Force teams, they have excellent squads, said Loorz after the results on Saturday. “Our women really stepped up at the end, and showed a lot of grit in our race with Air Force. It was really nice racing at the end of a long weekend.”

The Rebel women’s first win came from Alyssa Arnett with a score of 266.40 on the 1m board, while Mykayla Fielding claimed second (249.45). Fielding would go on to capture first in the 3m board (274.88) and Arnett finished second (265.50). The final woman to get a victory was Kristina Hendrick in the 400 IM, hustling with a time of 4:29.41. Schuett (4:31.89) and Kimberly Hendrick (4:34.50) finished two-three behind Kristina Hendrick.

On the men’s side, Paco-Pedroni was at it again capturing two wins on the day. He would outtouch Air Force by .53 seconds in the 200 free with a time of 1:39.10 and also claimed a win in the 100 free (44.24). The men’s other first place swim came from Robert Morgan in the 1m board (278.93), his first win on the 1m board, while Kasey Foley claimed first overall in the 50 free with a time of 20.59.
