UCSD Gets 1st Verbals of Marsh Era from Ellie Whitney and Brittney Miles

Southern Californians Ellie Whitney and Brittney Miles have both made verbal commitments to the University of California, San Diego, kicking off the recruiting season for the Tritons’ class of 2022.

Ellie Whitney

“so so so excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim at UC San Diego!! go tritons!! ?????‍♀️”

Whitney hails from Foothill Ranch, California and swims for Trabuco Hills High School and Irvine Novaquatics, where she specializes in the upper range of freestyle. At this summer’s Southern California Junior Olympics, Whitney competed in the 100/200/400/800/1500 freestyle events and the 100 breast.

Whitney represented her school at the 2016 CIF-Southern Section Division 1 Championships in the 100 free and 500 free, and her club team at 2016 California/Nevada Sectionals. There she earned lifetime bests in the 50/200/500/1650 free. In the spring of 2017 she tied her best 50 free and added a new PB in the 1000 free at Lakeside Stampede.

Whitney’s best 500 time would have secured her a spot in the A final at the at the 2017 PCSC Championships; her 1000 time would have placed 9th, and her 1650 would have been 10th.

Top SCY times:

  • 1650 free – 17:30.40
  • 1000 free – 10:23.23
  • 500 free – 5:02.95
  • 200 free – 1:53.80

Brittney Miles

“Beyond blessed to announce my verbal commitment to UC San Diego to continue my swimming career! Thank you to everyone who’s supported me???”

Miles lives in Corona, California and attends Santiago High School. At the CIF-Southern Section Division II Championships last May she was an A finalist in the 100 back and a B finalist in the 500 free. She notched a personal best in the latter in prelims, and led off the Santiago 400 free relay with her fastest-ever 100 free. Swimming for her club team Temecula Swim Club at California/Nevada Sectionals this summer, Miles improved across the board, earning new times in the 50/100/200 free, 200 back, and 100 fly.

Miles’ best 100/200 back and 200/500 free times would have put her in their respective A finals at 2017 PCSC Championships. The Tritons will count on her to carry the torch for current seniors Julia Toronczak and Alex Rodman, the top scorers in the backstroke events.

Top SCY times:

  • 100 back – 06
  • 200 back – 2:06.15
  • 50 free – 24.27
  • 100 free – 583
  • 200 free – 1:54.77
