UHSAA State Meet Preview: American Fork Girls Primed for 4th-Straight 6A Title

The Utah High School Athletic Association (UHSAA) is set to host its boys & girls swimming & diving championships starting tomorrow, February 12th. UHSAA participant schools are broken into 4 classifications, 3A-6A, based on the size of the school. 3A are the smallest schools, while 6A are the largest.

Returning 2020 winners:

6A:

• Katelyn Andrist (Skyridge) – women’s 200 free
• Allie Hill (American Fork) – women’s 200 IM, 500 free
• Ryan Lincoln (Westlake) – women’s 50 free
• Talia Thomas (American Fork) – women’s 100 free
• Cameron Barney (Westlake) – men’s 50 free, 100 free

5A:

• Caitlyn Romprey (Desert Hills) – women’s 200 free, 100 back
• Kylie Barber (Snow Canyon) – women’s 200 IM, 100 fly**

• Jenna Gibbons (Sky View) – women’s 100 breast
• Max Cannon (Canyon View) – men’s 200 IM**

3A:

• Hadlee Begay (Grantsville) – women’s 200 free, 500 free**
• Grace Smith (Rowland) – women’s 200 IM, 100 breast**
• Gen Jones (Wasatch Academy) – women’s 50 free, 100 back
• Buddy Yanelli (Judge Memorial) – men’s 200 IM, 100 breast

There are some notable changes to the returning 2020 champions, however. Snow Canyon junior Kylie Barber will not be defending her 2020 4A titles in the girls 200 IM and 100 fly, and is instead competing in the 50 free and 100 free this year. Similarly, Max Cannon, a Canyon View junior, will not defend his 4A boys 200 IM title, and will instead try out the 100 fly and 100 breast, in both of which he is seeded first.

They are event changes in the 3A as well, with Grantsville senior Hadlee Begay swapping the girls 200 free for the 100 fly. Begay will still attempt to defend her title in the 500 free. Grace Smith, a Rowland junior, will try to defend her 200 IM title, but has switched from the 100 breast to the 100 fly, where she will, coincidentally, be racing Begay.

The American Fork girls and Lone Peak boys are each 3x defending 6A team champions. American Fork girls appear to be in good position heading into the meet, with 4 top seeds in individual events, the top seed in the 400 free relay, 2nd seed in the 200 medley relay, and 3rd seed in the 200 free relay. Meanwhile, it appears the Lone Peak boys will be hard-pressed to add a 4th-consecutive title to the resumé. With only 11 individual entries, and 2 relays, it seems unlikely Lone Peak will have the depth to top the team standings again.

The Timpview girls and Olympus boys are the defending 5A champs, and both of which are chasing 2nd-consecutive titles this weekend.

The Desert Hills girls are the 2x defending 4A champions, while the Desert Hills boys are 3x defending champions. Desert Hills looks to be in position to battle for a 3rd-straight girls title, though Snow Canyon is set to give them a run for their money. SCHS is the top seed in the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay, as well as the 3rd seed in the 200 free relay. Desert Hills and Snow Canyon each have 3 individual top seeds. The Snow Canyon boys appear likely to come out on top in the team standings, based off the psych sheet. SCHS is seeded 1st in all 3 relays, and has the top seed in 5 individual events.

Carbon HS girls are the 2x defending 3A champions. Carbon is seeded first in a relay and has an individual top seed as well. It does seem depth may be able to pull Carbon over the top again, however, Richfield and Judge Memorial could make it a battle. Union won the boys title last year, and looks to be in for a hard-fought battle with Judge Memorial this year.
