CHICAGO – The Milwaukee women’s swimming and diving team were unable to contain the UIC Flames in the dual meet on Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Flames Natatorium in Chicago, Ill.

UIC outscored Milwaukee 184-115, but the Panthers still lead the all-time series, 24-6.

The Panthers took home three event wins on the day, including the 200 medley relay of Molly MelandAndrea BellartHannah Pozezinski, and Kelen McDaniels who touched the wall in 1:45.09.

Freshman Kelen McDaniels then sprinted her way to a top-place finish in the 50 free with a time of 24.55. Teammate Natalie Hey finished right behind in second place in 24.88.

Sophomore Giulia Guerra-Montes grabbed the final event win for the Panthers with a first-place finish in the 200 back (2:08.88) while teammate Mia Piljevic claimed second with a time of 2:10.52.

Freshman McKenzie Sanchez took home a pair of second-place finishes on both the one-meter and three-meter with a score of 260.63 and 249.90 respectively.

The Panthers also grabbed three second- and third-place finishes. First in the 100 fly, Meland (58.02) and sophomore Bella Passamani (59.28) finished second and third, while Meland grabbed another second-place finish in the 100 back (59.02) and Piljevic claimed third place (59.62). Lastly, Guerra-Montes (2:10.37) and freshman Bri Zablocki (2:13.26) also finished second and third in the 200 IM.

Sophomore Andrea Bellart grabbed a pair of third-place finishes in both the 100 breast and 200 breast, touching the wall in 1:07.75 and 2:31.00 respectively.

Zablocki had another top finish in the 200 fly, taking home third place with a time of 2:10.17 while McDaniels took home third place in the 100 free (54.00).

Sophomore Madeline Worgull went the distance in the 1000 free to also take third (10:52.32).

To cap off the night, the 200 free relay of McDaniels, Meland, Meegan Snyman, and Natalie Hey finished second with a time of 1:38.62.

The Milwaukee diving team will see action next on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 23-24, at the IUPUI House of Champions Diving Invitational in Indianapolis, Ind.

CHICAGO – The Milwaukee men’s swimming and diving team were unable to tame the UIC Flames in the dual meet on Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Flames Natatorium in Chicago, Ill.

UIC outscored Milwaukee 217-83, but the Panthers still lead the all-time series, 16-14-1.

The Panthers had many top performances on the day, including a pair of second-place finishes for the senior duo of Jacob Fase and Patrick Kelley.

Fase went 58.27 in the 100 breast and 2:08.82 in the 200 breast while Kelley swam the 100 fly in 51.43 and the 200 fly in 1:58.61.

Juniors Brandon NIemiec and Colin Duffy followed suit to grab third-place finishes. Niemiec claimed third in the 100 breast in 59.18 while Duffy swam to third place in the 200 fly in 1:59.93.

The 200 medley relay of Ben Huynh, Fase, Kelley, and Bailey Bodart sprinted to snatch a second-place finish in 1:34.74.

The distance crew threw down two third-place finishes. Sophomore Jack Garcia claimed third in the 1000 free with a time of 9:58.34 while Dane Van Allen also finished third in the 500 free in 4:48.72.

Sophomore Mason Schoof took home a third-place finish in the 200 IM in 1:57.49) while freshman Ben Huynh also grabbed third in the 100 back with a time of 53.32.

Freshman Jared Kleczka scored 293.18 for second place on the one-meter and 279.75 for third place on the three-meter.

The Panthers 200 free relay of John RuanJasper AppletonRyan Hakes, and Bodart ended the day with a third-place finish with a time of 1:26.64.

UIC had two dominating wins over Milwaukee as the men’s and women’s teams each notched their first win of the season.

Cydney Liebenberg broke the school record in 1-meter diving.  She scored 308.25 to surpass the previous record by three-quarters of a point.  She came just 1.7 points away from breaking her own record on the 3-meter board.

Ashton AmermanPoleena Kovalaske, and Lilly Culp joined Liebenberg as multiple event winners on the women’s side.  Felix LaFortune, Hunter Crook, Kyle Lewarchick, Danny Sivak, Jacob Cunningham, and Ben Gabbey led the men with two wins each.

Making their first competitive appearance at Flames Natatorium, the men posted a final score of 213-87, and the women won by a 183-117 count.

“It was our third meet in eight days so we knew fatigue was going to be a factor.  Even with this, we asked the team to raise their level of racing and they responded well,” Tim Loeffler said.

“Freshmen stepped up and had some big races.  A lot of the credit, though, has to go to our upperclassmen for setting the tone and mentoring them to be prepared for racing.”

Event Winners – Women

  • Cydney Liebenberg won 1-meter diving with a score of 308.25, nearly 50 points higher than the second place diver.  She was almost 90 points better than the next diver in winning the 3-meter event.
  • Ashton Amerman took first in the 1000 free and the 500 free.
  • Victoria Thor led a Flames sweep in the 200 free.
  • Anna Scovill won the 100 back.
  • Poleena Kovalaske edged teammate Jessica Amyette in the 100 breast.  Kovalaske also won the 100 free.
  • Lilly Culp was the fastest to get home in the 200 fly and the 100 fly.  She also won the 200 IM.
  • Jessica Amyette took the 200 breast crown.

Event Winners – Men

  • Felix LaFortune was the 3-meter winner with a score of 335.10.  He also won the 1-meter board.
  • Hunter Crook took the 1000 and 500 free titles.
  • Kyle Lewarchick was the 200 free winner and the 200 IM champion.
  • Danny Sivak was a comfortable winner in the 100 back.  He also had a comfortable margin in the 200 back.
  • Luke Hutchinson swam to a big win in the 200 fly.
  • Jacob Cunningham sprinted to first in the 50 and 100 free races.
  • Ben Gabbey took the 100 breast by half a second and was also the winner in the 200 breast.
  • Jeff Wiedoff touched the wall first in the 100 fly.

  • Andrew Lewarchick took second in 1-meter diving.
  • Joe Perez was second in the 1000.
  • Josh Dellorto and Michael Tegeler took the second and third spots in the 200 free.  Dellorto was also second in the 100 free, one spot ahead of Gabriele Sasia.
  • Tegeler took second in the 200 back, with Owen Zant right behind.
  • Bryce Wyma was the second place swimmer in the 200 back.
  • Jeff Wiedoff and Eric Weng went second and third in the 50 free.  Weng was third in the 100 fly.

  • Danny Sivak, Ben Gabbey, Jeff Wiedoff, and Bryce Wyma gave the Flames their first relay win of the season in the 200 medley.
  • Cunningham, Wiedoff, Sivak, and Wyma took first in the 200 free.

Up Next

  • The team will have two weeks to rest up and train for the fall invitational.
  • UIC will make its first appearance at the IUPUI House of Champions over three days starting November 22.
