Inside of UIndy Swimming & Diving head coach Jason Hite‘s office, there is a couch, a desk, an abundance of snacks for his team, and several decorations along his walls and desk. Among the decorations, one stands out: Nick Dworet’s picture surrounded with swim caps and hats decorated with a green and white logo with the words “Swim4Nick”. A simple, yet touching mural and memory of the bright-eyed, Oreo-loving 2018 Greyhound Commit.
Three years ago, on the first weekend in January, Nick Dworet came on an official visit to the University of Indianapolis, he committed to the Greyhounds swim and dive program, and Coach Hite and the rest of the UIndy family did the same to him. A month later, the high school senior had his life taken from him along with 16 others in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.
Three years later, UIndy still honors the fallen swimmer each day. During practice, several UIndy swimmer’s rep Swim4Nick gear.
SWIM4NICK
“We now have people that we’re teammates of Nick on his club team,” noted Hite. “His name is carried on.”
Dworet swam for TS Aquatics in Florida and had dreams of representing Sweden in the 2020 (now 2021) Olympics.
“The amount of people that have come here that are connected to him from his team is continuing to be on the rise,” Hite said. “It’s something that we are excited about doing, and it should be a fun afternoon of racing.”
ABOUT LINDENWOOD
“They’ve got a strong team,” Hite said. “They continue to be a top-10 team in Division II on both sides.”
Lindenwood, a team that recently took victories at the Delta State Christmas Invitational, has been able to secure two fall meets this season so far. The Lions racked up fourth place at last season’s GLVC Championship on the men’s side and placed third on the women’s side.
Added Hite: “I think we’re in for some good racing, and that’s what it’s about right now.”
The Greyhounds last raced on Nov. 19 against Eastern Illinois at Ruth Lilly Fitness Center where they took the win on both the men’s and women’s sides while notching NCAA time cuts and Gabriel Knaut setting the men’s program’s 50 free record.
“We are ready to get up on the blocks and show our hard work,” Hite said about his team. “We’re excited to see what they can accomplish in a live event.
“I think we’re in for a treat on Saturday.”
The Greyhounds and Lions will face off on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 2 PM.
