UMass Women Sweep Vermont & Binghamton, Bearcats Down Minutemen For First Time

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts swimming and diving team hosted its first home meet of the season on Saturday, highlighted by the women’s 200-yard Medley Relay team of Megan MitchellMaggie DesmondSummer Pierce, and Caroline Mahoney setting a pool record. Megan Mitchell also set the pool record in the 200-yard backstroke. Andrew Bell and Emma Petrovich won both the Men’s and Women’s 1m and 3m diving competitions, respectively. Bell posted a No. 3 all-time score in the 3m and a No. 5 all-time score in the 1m, while both Bell and Petrovich made NCAA Zone Cuts in the 3m dive.

On The Podium
Women’s 3m divers Petrovich (290.80), Shreeya Sinha (235.10), and Salem Howes (226.00) swept the podium. Beatriz Olivieri Barbosa was victorious in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing in 2:04.65, good for No. 7 all-time at UMass, while Pierce trailed not far behind, claiming second place with a time of 2:05.88. The Minutewomen swept the podium in the 200-yard backstroke, with Megan Mitchell recording a pool-record time of 2:02.78 for first place. Teammates Lauren Stott (2:08.30) and Bri Williams (2:09.74) followed in second and third.

Men’s 1m divers Bell, Sean O’Dell (271.50), and Tommy Cotner (262.30) swept the podium, with Bell recording a third-best all-time score at Massachusetts with 324.65. Bell and Cotner claimed first and third, respectively, in the 3m dive, posting scores of 345.40 (fifth-best all-time at UMass) and 259.20, respectively. Meanwhile, Sam Haddad was victorious in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:08.73) and Emerson Kiefer raced to third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.43.

Top Finishes
Caroline Mahoney proved victorious in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.13 seconds, while Olivieri Barbosa and Bella Snyder claimed second and third in the 1000-yard freestylewith times of 10:38.37 and 10:45.26, respectively. Megan Mitchell also won the 100-yard backstroke (56.43), while Desmond won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.90).

Noah Witt won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:54.04 and Eric Eastham claimed second (1:55.67). Witt also earned second place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 51.67 seconds, with teammate Beau Bengston following closely behind, finishing the race in 52.82 seconds. Jamie MacDonald and Jake Bailey swam the 200-yard butterfly in 1:54.63 and 1:56.91, respectively, good for second and third place.

Team Results
The Minutemen fell to Binghamton by a score of 172.50 to 127.50, while the Minutewomen won the dual meet against both Binghamton (228 to 72) and Vermont (178 to 122).

UMass returns to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 1 p.m. for a meet at Bryant.

AMHERST, Mass. – The Binghamton men’s swimming & diving team closed out the fall semester with an impressive performance in a dual meet at UMass on Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats won 172.5-127.5 in their first win over the Minutemen in 10 tries. In the women’s competition, Binghamton was defeated by UMass 228-72 and Vermont 200-100.

Sophomore Elijah Lanfear was a triple winner for the Bearcats, winning the 100 back (50.12), 50 free (20.92) and the 100 fly (48.69). He was also part of the first-place 200 medley relay team that included freshman Max Kaback, junior Xiaoyu Lin and senior Ryan Maierle and clocked a winning time of 1:32.22. For the season, Lanfear has now won a team-best 13 individual events.

Senior Justin Meyn and freshman Liam Preston were each double winners. Meyn swept the 100 breast (57.85) and the 100 free (46.47) while Preston captured the 1000 free (9:43.99) and the 500 free (4:43.82). Preston and Meyn were also both on the first-place 200 free relay team that included Maierle and junior Liam Murphy and recorded a time of 1:23.76.

Other individual winners for the Binghamton men’s team were Murphy in the 200 free (1:41.67), Lin – who tied for first – in the 200 breast (2:08.73) and junior Jake Vecchio, who won the 200 fly (1:54.10).

In the women’s events, junior Courtney Moane was second in both the 100 breast (1:06.69) and the 200 breast (2:26.84). She was also part of the second-place 200 medley relay team that included freshmen Olivia Philbrick and Maria Pignatelli as well as junior Molly Greeley. The Bearcat quartet finished with a time of 1:48.64.

Binghamton now turns its attention to 2023, with its first meet at home against St. Bonaventure on Saturday, Jan. 21.

AMHERST, MASS – The Catamounts continued a strong 2022-23 season defeating Binghamton 200-100. Vermont also competed against UMass falling 177.5-122.5 With the results today the Catamounts move to (6-3, 2-1 AE).

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Halley Laney continued her strong sophomore season piecing together a first place finishing in the 100 fly in a time of 57.12 while also taking second in the 200 IM and third in the 200 fly. In the 200 fly Laney finished in 2:08.51 while in the 200 IM she finished just .08 behind the leader in a time of 2:10.81.
  • Jackie House had another dominant showing in her sophomore season taking the sweep in the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle. House finished first in the 100 free in a time of 51.89, the 200 free in a time of 1:53.06 almost a full four seconds ahead of the field. House also took home first in the 500 in a time of 4:59.46 which was a pool record and just ahead of teammate Ella Church.
  • Church took home first I the 1000 freestyle in a time of 10:33.51 over four and a half seconds ahead of the field. In the 500 free she finished in a time of 5:04.85.
  • Autumn Bullinger and Natalie Schlemmer continued their strong first year in Catamount Country with Bullinger taking second in 100 back in a time of 58.67 and was a part of the 200 freestyle relay that took second. Schlemmer claimed first in the 200 breaststroke finishing in 2:24.48 while also claiming third in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:08.18.
  • The Catamounts continued a strong season in the relays claiming fourth in the 200 medley in a time of 1:49.45 with the combination of Emma WainwrightNatalie SchlemmerHally Laney and Mina Poppas. They also finished second in the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:30.29 with House, Bullinger, Cailin Campbell and Poppas.
  • Poppas also finished second in the 50 free in a time of 24.48 and finished third in the 100 free coming in at 53.52.

UP NEXT
Following the Catamounts dual meet at UMass UVM will travel to Loudonville, N.Y. where they will take on Siena in their final road meet of the season on Sunday, January 15. The start time for that meet is scheduled for 1 p.m.
