Women’s Recap

BALTIMORE – The UMBC women’s swimming and diving squads won all but one event in a 227-70 victory over VMI at the UMBC Aquatic Complex. .

Senior Caroline Sargent (Trumbull, Conn.) continued her outstanding fall by capturing the 200 freestyle (1:58.42) and 200 backstroke (2:08.59) events. Graduate student Natalija Marin (Belgrade, Serbia) won both butterfly events for the first time since achieving that feat at Towson on Nov. 2, 2019.

Three Retrievers captured gold for the first time in their collegiate careers. Senior Courtney Spelman (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.06), junior Taylor Holderfield (Chicago, Ill.) touched first in the 400 IM (4:41.70), while freshman Colleen Adams (State College, Pa.) earned gold in the 500 freestyle (5:19.39).

Other winners for UMBC were;

  • Sophomore Roaa Farag (Cairo, Egypt) – 1000 free (11:07.09)
  • Sophomore Nyah Stahl (Mount Wolf, Pa.) – 100 back (1:00.30)
  • Sophomore Makaela Hill (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) – 50 free (24.75)
  • Senior Alexis Bruington (Olney, Md./Magruder) – 1 meter dive (194.00)
  • Senior Tonia Papapetrou (Nicosia, Cyprus) – 100 free (55.08)
  • Junior Jenna Gwinn (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales -200 breast (2:27.76)

The Retrievers do not compete against until they take part in the ECAC Winter Championships in East Long Meadow, N.Y. on Dec. 3-5.

Men’s Recap

BALTIMORE – The UMBC men’s swimming and diving squads won all but one event and set a new pool record in a 228-70 victory over VMI at the UMBC Aquatic Complex.

To cap the meet, the quartet of senior Tiago Asakawa (Sumaré, Brazil), sophomore Ryan Harding (Laurel, Md./Reservoir), junior Gabe Laracuente (Gaithersburg, Md./Good Counsel) and junior Niklas Weigelt (Clayton, Calif.) completed the 200 yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:22.98. The previous mark of 1:23.43 was set in 2019 by a foursome which also included Asakawa.

The record capped a big day for Weigelt, who also captured the unlikely combo of the 50 (21.17) and 500 freestyle (4:41.92) events. Senior Samuel Jyawook (Franklin, Tenn.) also doubled in a the 1000 freestyle (9:43.12) and 200 butterfly (1:53.56). Sophomore diver Dom Tobin (Frankfort, Ill.) won both diving events, earning his first two collegiate golds. He amassed 248.48 points on the 1-meter board and 225.65 on the 3-meter board.

Two other members of the record-setting relay squad earned first-place finishes. Asakawa won the 100 freestyle in a time of 46.86, while Laracuente edged him for first place in the 100 butterfly (50.37).

  • Senior Jimmy Dwyer (New City, N.Y.) – 200 free (1:45.19)
  • Senior Luka Zuric (Setauket N.Y.) – 100 back (53.76)
  • Sophomore Charles Bennici (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) – 200 backstroke (1:59.51)
  • Sophomore Daniel Nicusen (Santana De Mures, Romania) – 200 breast (2:08.92)
  • Senior Kai Wisner (Syracuse, N.Y.) – 400 IM (4:04.78)

BALTIMORE, Md. – The VMI men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swam against America East powerhouse UMBC (University of Maryland, Baltimore County) Saturday, falling to the Retrievers 228-70 in men’s competition and 227-70 in women’s action.

Junior Jack Sheehan won the men’s 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.90 and was third in the 200 breast in 2:18.09. Bridger Thurston took second in both the 1 meter (218.78) and 3 meter (192.55) diving events and Evan Wilson had personal bests in both competitions. Chino Vera was third in the 100 free in 49.12 and fourth in the 50 free in 22.25. Connor Doyle placed fourth in the 100 back (55.70) and fifth in the 500 free (5:03.63). Sam Chopper placed third in the 1000 free in 10:15. 99 and Conner Jorgensen was fourth in the 200 back. Andrew Mills took fourth in the 100 fly, Ethan Griffith placed fourth in the 400 IM and Collin Marks was fifth in the 200 free.

The men’s 200 medley relay team of Doyle, Sheehan, Tyler Blackwell and Vera finished fourth in 1:40.31 and the team of Sheehan, Dalton Cosner, Mike Tulupov and Vera took third in 1:29.93.

London Yerasimides won the women’s 3 meter dive with a personal best score of 215.93 and was second in the 1 meter (184.45). The Keydet women’s divers outscored the Retrievers 23-13.

Rachel Greathouse broke a freshmen record for the second-straight week, snapping the 200 free mark in 1:58.82 to place second. She also was second in the 500 free in 5:22.05 and third in the 200 fly in 2:17.74. Anne Bowles was second in the 100 breast (1:09.21) and fifth in the 200 breast in 2:44.28. Courtney Novotny finished the 100 free in 57.52 to take third and 1:05.50 in the 100 fly to finish fifth. Sarah Liebenow was fourth in the 1000 free (12:09.00) and fifth in the 400 IM (5:14.74). Ruki Sarkari placed fifth in both the 100 and 200 back and Kate Taylor was fifth in the 50 free. The 200 free relay team of Taylor, Carter Wasser, Isabella DeCosta and Novotny was fourth in 1:49.68 and Sarkari, Bowles, DeCosta and Taylor took fifth in the 200 medley relay in 2:00.23.

The Keydets will return to Baltimore for their next competition at the Loyola Invitational Dec. 3-4.
