BALTIMORE, Md. – The VMI men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were defeated Saturday at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC), 139-101 in men’s action and 158-118 in the women’s side.

Jack Sheehan won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:13.20. Bridger Thurston took second in both the 1-meter (196.80) and 3-meter (165.30) diving events and Zach Emerson was second in the 100-backstroke in 54.86. Kai Green finished second in the 100-freestyle in 49.40 and took third place in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.39. Conner Jorgensen swam a time of 4:19.32 to place second in the 400-IM.

Sarah MacDougall finished third in the women’s 100-freestyle in 58.00. Sophie Svoboda recorded times of 1:12.14 in the 100- breaststroke and 2:41.49 in the 200-breast.

Both teams return to Baltimore Dec. 6-7 for the Loyola Invitational.

BALTIMORE –  The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams earned victories over VMI in a dual meet held at the UMBC Aquatic Complex this afternoon.

The women recorded their first triumph of the year, winning a 139-101 decision, while the men improved to 3-2 by a 158-117 score.

A Retriever finished first in all but one event during the meet.

In diving, senior Devin Gromen (Crofton, Md./Arundel) and freshman Will Henrickson (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) each won both boards. Gromen easily outdistanced the field in capturing the 1-meter (207/.97) and 3-meter (222.52) events. Henrickson earned the first two victories of his career, capturing the 1-meter board with a mark of 219.22 and the 3-meter event at 197.02.

Twenty-two different swimmers earned golds on the day. Freshman Kylie Kelly (Hagerstown, Md.) was the only swimmer to finish first in two events. Early in the meet, Kelly won the 200 yard-freestyle in a time of 1:57.41 and she also placed first in the 400 individual medley, touching in at 4:38.78.

On the women’s side, four freshmen won for the first time in the black-and-gold. Sierra Tosten (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) closed the first half of the meet by capturing the 50 freestyle in a time of 25.36. Calla Derr (Middletown, Md./Middletown), Claire Custance (Wayne, N.J.) and Makayla Ludwick (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) each touched first in the final three individual events of the day. Derr placed first in the 200 backstroke (2:12.92), Custance did the same in the 200 breaststroke (2:30.30) and Ludwick outdistanced the field in the 500 freestyle (5:14.00).

Three first-year men earned gold in their fourth collegiate meets. Christopher Welsh (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) triumphed in the 200 freestyle (1:45.38), Niklas Weigelt (Clayton, Calif.) sprinted his way to a win in the 50 freestyle (22.01), while Gabriel Laracuente (Gaithersburg, Md./Good Counsel) posted a victory in the 100 butterfly (50.89).

UMBC quickly returns to the pool when they compete in the George Mason Invitational, beginning on Thursday, Nov. 21. The Retrievers will compete against American, Drexel, Florida Atlantic, Richmond, Seton Hall, Shippensburg, UNC Wilmington and the host Patriots. The action at the Jim McKay Natatorium runs from Thursday through Saturday.
