UNC Adds Summer Juniors Qualifier Eden Goettsch To Class Of 2027

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Eden Goettsch has announced her commitment to swim and study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) this upcoming fall. Goettsch is from Naperville, Illinois, where she attends Naperville Central High School and swims year-round with FMC Aquatic Club

I am beyond excited to announce my commitment to swim and study at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill! I couldn’t have done it without the help from my wonderful coaches, teammates, friends, and family!! Go Heels 💙🐏”

Goettsch is a pure sprinter who focuses primarily on freestyle and backstroke. She’s had a breakthrough season this year, highlighted by her performance at the NCSA Spring Championships in March. In the 50 freestyle, Goettsch finished 7th in 22.77, good for a best time by half a second. In the past year, her 50 freestyle has improved by over a second, while her 100 free has come down by over two seconds.

Goettsch also had a strong showing at the Illinois High School State Championships this past November. She earned 6th individually in both the 50 free (23.42) and 100 back (56.71) to set two new school records, as well as contributed to her team’s 200 medley relay on backstroke (26.16) and 200 freestyle relay as the anchor (22.62).

Top SCY Times:

  • 50 free – 22.77
  • 100 free – 51.88
  • 50 back – 25.83
  • 100 back – 55.97
  • 200 IM – 2:07.68

The Tar Heels finished 4th out of 12 teams at the 2023 ACC Championships. The 50 freestyle was a relatively strong event for UNC at ACCs, as they scored a total of 48 points in that event alone. Goettsch is less than a tenth outside of what it took to advance to finals this year, but could very well get there by the end of next season if her improvement continues.

Leading the sprint squad last season was fifth-year Grace Countie, who finished 5th overall at ACCs in 21.84. Sophomore Olivia Nel was the next highest finisher at 13th (22.33), while sophomore Greer Pattison took 17th (22.46). Goettsch’s arrival to this group is timely, as UNC will lose over half their points in the event due to Countie’s absence.

Goettsch joins Ava Muzzy, Michaela Chokureva, Taylor Bloom, Lucy Walker, Sophia Frei, Samantha Armand, and Mary Macaulay in the Tar Heels’ incoming class of 2027.
