The Notre Dame women’s squad ended their weeklong training trip in Fort Meyers with a dual meet against Florida Gulf Coast. Performances were strong for both teams in this early season meet, particularly by the younger swimmers, with FGCU winning 11 of 14 events and coming out on top 158-104.
Leading the night was Florida Gulf Coast sophomore Katie Armitage, who won both the 100 breast (1:01.73) and the 200 breast (2:15.69), setting new pool records and achieving NCAA ‘B’ standards in both events.
Florida Gulf Coast freshman Elise Haan won the 100 back, coming in at 54.41, under the NCAA ‘B’ standard of 55.09. She also won the 200 back (2:00.26).
Notre Dame freshman Ella Moynihan won two events, the 500 free (4:57.06) and the 200 freestyle (1:50.19). She was followed by freshmen ladies Hannah Burdge (FGCU 1:51.98) and Kyra Sarazen (ND 1:51.99) who battled for second place with very solid swims.
Florida Gulf Coast sophomore Hannah Wong came out strong winning the 200 fly in a season best 2:02.19, followed closely by freshman Nicole Smith of Notre Dame (2:02.72)
Freshman Katie Latham of Florida Gulf Coast won both the 50 free (23.03) and the 100 free (50.14), just missing the ‘B” standards in both events.
Florida Gulf Coast junior Barbara Caraballo impressively won the 200IM by nearly 4 seconds with a 2:02.76, which is less than 2 seconds off her 2015 season ending best time.
Post-grad Emma Reaney, American record holder in the 200 breaststroke (SCY) and Notre Dame’s most decorated swimmer in history (of either gender) has returned to Notre Dame to train after spending the summer with SwimMac. She turned in exhibition swims of 1:01.5 in the 100 breast and a 2:00.9 in the 200 IM.
