University of Michigan Swimmers Win Medals At Pan Am Games

Six current or former University of Michigan swimmers competed at the Pan American Games in Toronto last week (July 11, July 14-18), with four of them bringing home medals for their respective countries.

Representing the United States were sophomores Clara Smiddy and Gillian Ryan and alums Ryan Feeley (2010-13) and Emily Brunemann (2006-08, 2010). Sophomore Evan White and alum Richard Funk (2012-15) represented Canada.

 

Individually, Funk (2012-15) won silver in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:11.51), bronze in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:00.29) and an additional bronze as part of Canada’s 4×100-meter medley relay (3:34.40).

 

Smiddy won bronze medals in the 100-meter backstroke (1:00.49) and the 200-meter backstroke (2:11.47). Both of those times are new U-M records for long course meters.

 

Ryan won bronze in the 400-meter freestyle (4:09.46) and gold as part of the 4×200-meter freestyle relay that set a new Pan Am Games record by almost seven seconds (7:54.32). Additionally, her time in the 400-meter freestyle is a new U-M record for long course meters.

 

Feeley (2010-13) picked up a silver medal in the 400-meter freestyle (3:49.69). He was also sixth in the 1,500-meter freestyle (15:19.99).

 

Brunemann and White only swam one event each, finishing just outside of medal position. Brunemann finished fourth in the open water 10K (2:03:17.5), while White was fourth in the 200-meter IM (2:00.60).
