University of West Florida opens season against North Florida and Vanderbilt

The University of West Florida women’s swimming and diving team will open the 2014-15 season on Thursday at the UWF Aquatic Center in a double dual meet against Division I opponents North Florida and Vanderbilt. The meet will start at 4 p.m., and fans not able to attend in person will be able to follow the action with live video and live results at www.GoArgos.com.

Impressive First Year for UWF
UWF finished 23rd at the NCAA Championships in its first year as a program in 2013-14, which was also third highest for all Florida Division II teams behind only Tampa and Florida Southern. UWF’s Annie-Marie Macht highlighted nationals for UWF by placing first in the consolation final for the 200 IM. UWF also finished second at the NSISC championships, as Peggy de Villiers was the meet’s high point swimmer and Josie McKee was the high point diver.

UWF Picked To Finish 2nd in NSISC
West Florida was picked second in the NSISC preseason coaches’ poll, and five Argonauts were selected to the preseason All-NSISC team. Swimmers Peggy de Villiers, Anna-Marie Macht and Emily Mitchell were picked to the team, along with divers Josie McKee and Meghan Zets. The NSISC will have a new look this year with the addition of Minnesota State, MSU Morehead, Northern State and St. Cloud State.

Argos Again Open Season Versus Division I Foes
For the second straight year UWF will open the season hosting Division I teams at the UWF Aquatic Center. Last year the Argos started the year facing Florida State and Tulane, and this year North Florida and Vanderbilt come to Pensacola to open the season. Vanderbilt is coming off a 2013-14 season that saw the Commodores break 15 school records in the SEC Championships. UNF placed eighth at the 2014 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships. The Argos faced both UNF and Vanderbilt last season on the road, falling to UNF 128-171 and to Vanderbilt 57-203.
