UNLV Swim & Dive Announces 2017-18 Slate

A trip to Texas for a four-day invitational highlights the 2017-18 slate for UNLV men’s and women’s swimming and diving, as the schedule was released by the athletics department Thursday.

“We are excited to meet several regional rivals this season,” said UNLV second-year head coach Ben Loorz. “We’re looking forward to January when we head to our oldest rival, UC Santa Barbara, for a unique FridaySaturday format, which will help us prep for our conference championships. The University of Toronto, which boasts current world-record holder Kylie Masse on the roster, makes a return to our schedule after several years off. And finally, we have moved the long-standing UNLV Invite to a more competitive weekend in November and will host many of the West’s best programs, including UCSB, Pacific, Cal Poly, BYU, CSU Bakersfield and Cal Baptist.”

The Rebels will begin the season with a pair of home meets, with the home opener set for Oct. 21 against CSU Bakersfield, while Toronto makes the trip south to face the Rebels in Buchanan Natatorium on Oct. 28.

Though UNLV will not face BYU this season, its annual series with Utah remains alive, as it will go on the road for the first time with a Nov. 4 dual meet in Salt Lake City. The Rebels will then prepare for a pair of invitationals, beginning with the UNLV Invite on Nov. 16-18. That will be followed by the Texas Invite, hosted by the University of Texas and featuring some of the top teams in the nation, on Nov. 9-Dec. 2 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

The Rebels will take a break from competition during the exam break, and will return to the pool with a pair of meets at Santa Barbara, California, at the end of their winter training trip. UNLV will swim in the UCSB Friday Night Lights meet on Jan. 12, and then take on the Gauchos in a dual meet the next day.

The next two weeks will see the final home competition of the year. First will be a double-dual meet with Air Force and the Nevada, Reno women’s squad on Jan. 20. On Jan. 26, UNLV will host its Friday Night Lights with Wyoming, and then will take on Wyoming and Grand Canyon in a Senior Day meet Jan. 27.

This year’s Mountain West women’s championships will be held at San Antonio, Texas, from Feb. 14-17, while the men’s WAC Championship meet will take place in Houston, Texas, from Feb. 21-24. The women’s NCAA Championships will be hosted by Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio, from March 14-17, while the men’s national meet will take place in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on the campus of the University of Minnesota from March 21-14.
