UNLV hosted Wyoming and Grand Canyon for a double dual. UNLV had the most wins on the day, besting both opponents in the women’s meet, and taking down Grand Canyon in the men’s. Wyoming had the next best record winning both the meets on the men’s side. GCU’s women took down Wyoming. UNLV dominated the women’s events, taking 10 of 16, followed by GCU at 4, and Wyoming at 2. Things were much more even in the men’s meet, with UNLV winning 6 of 16 events, and 5 apiece for GCU and Wyoming.

Ida Schutt (UNLV) had a trio of individual event wins, coming in the 200 free, 500 free, and 1000 free. In her first event of the day, Schutt posted a season best 10:06.99 in the 1000 to win by 5 seconds. That time ranks 3rd in the Mountain West Conference this season. With just one heat of men’s 1000 separating the race, Schutt then went 1:50.33 in the 200 free. Her time was just barely off her season best of 1:50.16, a time that ranks her 9th in the conference. Schutt then went 5:01.85 in the 500 free later in the meet, taking the event by 4 and a half seconds over Katelyn Blattner of Wyoming (5:05.43).

Myka Fielding (UNLV) swept the women’s diving events, posting scores of 298.35 and 324.85 in the 1 and 3 meter respectively. Fielding’s top score this season in the 3 meter (345.00) is the 3rd best score in the Mountain West Conference, as the Rebels approach the Mountain West Championships on February 14-17th.

Dylan Tarazona (UNLV) took the men’s 100 fly with a 48.65, beating Daniil Antipov by half a second. Tarazona was just off his season best of 48.10. Teammate Grant Norgan took the men’s 200 free with a 1:38.73, the only swimmer to break 1:40. Norgan leads the Western Athletic Conference with his season best of 1:37.09, followed closely by Antipov (1:37.22).

Mark Nikolaev won a trio of events, the 100 back, 200 back, and 200 IM. Nikolaev went his slowest time of the season to take the 100 back, touching the wall in 50.08, his only time above 50 seconds this season. Nikolaev leads the NCAA in the 100 back with his 44.99 from the Northwestern TYR Invite back in November. He then went a 1:50.29 to win the 200 back by over half a second, in a time that’s fairly normal in a dual meet race for him. In his last event of the meet, Nikolaev won the 200 IM in his 3rd fastest time of the season – 1:51.48. Nikolaev is ranked 1st in the WAC in the 100 free, 100 back, and 200 back, and is ranked 2nd in the 200 IM.

Press Release – Grand Canyon:

Las Vegas–The Grand Canyon men’s and women’s swimming and diving team finished off their last regular season meet as the Lopes took on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the University of Wyoming at the Buchanan Natatorium on the campus of UNLV.

After winning their last two meets, the men fell to both Wyoming and UNLV, by scores of (193-107) and (176-123).  The women went 1-1 on the day, defeating Wyoming in a close meet (151-148) and losing to UNLV (188-111).

After dropping both meets, head coach Steve Schaffer was disappointed in his teams result.

“Our men were pretty flat today and really did not put up much of a fight,”  Schaffer said. “Everyone is going to have to do much better if we are going to beat these teams at the WAC Championships.”.

As per usual, the men’s 200 medley relay of Mark NikolaevMazen El KamashYoussef El Kamash and Daniil Antipov finished first with a time of 1:29.56.  Nikolaev also finished first in the men’s 200 IM, men’s 200 yard backstroke and the men’s 100 backstroke with times od 1:51.48, 1:50.29 and 50.08.   Antipov also had additional success finishing second in the men’s 200 fly with a time of 1:49.89.

Bogdan Plavin placed first in the men’s 50 freestyle with a winning time of 20.66

Pietro Hufnagel Toscani took second in the 1 meter dive with a score of 296.35 and third in the 3 meter dive with a score of 296.70.

With the women’s team spitting their meet, Schaffer was very pleased with how they competed against good competition.

“This was a very good showing for our women, taking on two strong teams ranked higher than us,”  Schaffer said. “Wyoming is ranked 22nd and UNLV 24th in the Mid-major Rankings so coming away with a split was a pleasant surprise.”

The women’s 200 medley relay team of Iryna Glavnyk, Marina McInellyDiana Jaruseviciute and Samiha Mohsen finished in second with a time of 1:44.20.  Glavnyk also finished second in the Women 100 backstroke with a time of 55.45 while winning both the 200 backstroke and the 200 IM with winning times of1:59.38 and 2:03.79.  Mclnelly finished second in the women’s 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.09 and in the 200 breaststroke in 2:21.74

Estela Davis Ortiz came out on top in the women’s 200 fly with a time of 2:03.05, finished second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:59.76 and contributed to a second place finish in the 400 free relay with Roaia MashalyDiana Jaruseviciute and Samiha Mohsen.  Jaruseviciute also finished in first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.43.

Even though the Lopes are returning to Phoenix with not the result they wanted, Schaffer seems very optimistic for the future and the WAC Championships in late February.

“On the bright side, we had a similarly poor performance in November against Air Force and we came back and swam very fast when it mattered at Northwestern, “Schaffer said. “Hopefully we will be much, much better in three weeks.”

The Lopes swimmers will have a break until WAC Championships, but the divers will be in action next weekend as they to Colorado Springs for the Air Force Diving Invitational from Feb. 2 through Feb. 3.

QUOTEABLE-
Ida Schutt was unbelievable this weekend. Great swims all around for her, as she placed first in three events. Sofia Carnevale is also another one on the women’s side that stands out, she goes into her breaststroke events and wins almost every weekend. Eva Kim had some great swims this meet, she’s a freshman and it was her first time on the A relay for the 200 medley relay and she helped win it. On the men’s side, Dylan Tarazona was the swimmer of this meet. He came out ready to fight, it was great to see that for his last home meet. Brad Gonzales is another swimmer who we got used to winning the 500 and 1000 free every meet.
For the men, it was great to see them race against some of the teams who were top in the WAC last year. It helps us get ready and more confident as the WAC Championship meet approaches. The boys had some great races today, including the 400 free relay at the end where we took first and second in the event.
For the women, they beat both teams today and it was good to see them swim some great swims. We’re pretty confident going into MW Champs this year, things are looking pretty good.”
– Head Coach Ben Loorz
