Open water swimming legend Steven Munatones has been sent home from the hospital a week after suffering a heart attack.
In an updated posted to Facebook by his sister Stacey, she says that he was sent home in a “life vest,” which is a wearable defibrillator given to patients at risk for sudden cardiac arrest. The vest detects a life-threatening heart rhythm and automatically delivers a “treatment shock” to restore normal rhythm.
Munatones suffered a heart attack late last week, and has made slow improvements after being placed in a hypothermic state to protect his tissues.
Toni Friedman Lansbury has set up a GoFundMe page to collect donations for his family during the recovery period.
Munatones is a member of the International Marathone Swimming Hall of Fame and is a former USA National Open Water Swimming Team coach.
