The third night of finals wrapped up at the YMCA Spring Festival in New Jersey, featuring University of Pennsylvania commit Matt Fallon in one of his signature breaststroke events.
In the men’s 100 breaststroke, Fallon posted a winning time of 52.68, coming just off of his personal best of 52.35 that he set during the prelims session. With his best time in prelims, Fallon moved up to 14th all time in 17-18 age group history. Notably, both of Fallon’s times from today fall under the University of Pennsylvania program record of 53.03 set by Brandan McHugh and would have won him the 2020 Ivy League Championship title by almost a second.
Behind Fallon, Ben Endersby finished second in a time of 55.23, cutting almost 2 seconds off of his best time and breaking into 55 second territory for the first time.
Cal commit Jack Alexy also threw down a best time during finals, winning the men’s 100 backstroke with a time of 47.29, chopping .27 off of his best time of 47.56, which he just set last month. 17-year-old James Curreri finished second with a 48.65, cutting almost a second off of his personal best in the process.
In the men’s 200 butterfly, 17-year-old Trent Russano demolished his personal best en route to a first place finish. After posting a best time of 1:47.02 during prelims to cut over a half second off of his best time, Russano lowered it even further by dropping another two seconds, coming in with a time of 1:45.07 during finals. Russano now moves to 91st all-time in the 17-18 age group in the event with his swim. Russano is committed to swim for Pitt in the fall.
Russano, Fallon, and Alexy joined forces with Rob Alexy to win the 800 freestyle relay for the Greater Somerset Y with a final time of 6:36.65, beating the field by almost 10 seconds. Coming off of the 200 butterfly, Russano crushed his best time in the 200 freestyle leading off, posting a time of 1:38.66 to slash almost 3 seconds off of his personal best of 1:41.28.
On the women’s side, 15-year-old Emily Thompson won the 200 butterfly with a best time of 2:00.12, chopping .65 off of her previous time. 16-year-old Lily Hann finished second, touching in 2:01.51, dropping 6 seconds from her prelims time.
Another 15-year-old, Clare Logan, won the 100 backstroke, coming in with a time of 54.04 to touch ahead of Ela Habjan’s time of 54.50. With their swims, both swimmers cut about a second off of their best times.
In a tight battle in the women’s 100 breaststroke, 18-year-old Emma Shaughnessy came out victorious, posting a time of 1:02.24 to drop over a half second off of her personal best. 15-year-old Emily Constable came in second place with a time of 1:02.87, also dropping over a half second.
The women from the Greater Somerset YMCA cruised past the field to win the 800 freestyle relay. The team of Catherine Meisner, Julia Meisner, Danielle D’Ambrosio, and Emily Thompson came in with a final time of 7:22.28, with Catherine Meisner leading off in an impressive 1:47.61 after winning the 200 freestyle in 1:47.30 last night.
This kid is a good swimmer.
He just went 1:51.68 in the 2BR in prelims.
That’s already faster than the Ivy League record. His 100 is also the second fastest in Ivy League history.
