Honoring outstanding individuals and organizations that have been impacted by or left a positive mark on diversity and inclusion in the sport, USA Swimming has launched a Multicultural Heroes Series on USASwimming.org.
Published monthly, the series kicked off with an article featuring American record holder Simone Manuel. It highlighted her journey from age-group swim sensation at the First Colony Swim Team through USA Swimming’s Diversity Select Camp to Stanford University and a place on Team USA.
“It’s so important to emphasize the sung and especially behind-the-scenes heroes to show that work in diversity and inclusion in swimming has an enormous impact on people’s lives,” says USA Swimming Club Development Managing Director Pat Hogan. “There are many inspiring stories showcasing the people and groups that help to make a change in the sport. This series will bring them to the forefront.”
USA Swimming’s efforts in diversity and inclusion include numerous programs focused on developing clubs that serve multicultural communities, young athletes from underserved populations and minority coaches or coaches on multicultural teams.
In addition to programs and services, USA Swimming offers swimmers an outreach membership option that allows swimmers from low-income families to join for a fee of no more than $5 a year.
